I've just found a company selling sample tents at half the rrp.  Looks very interesting. Has anyone ever bought one of these?

Hello Homebird, i`ve just bought a vango nile 800 sample tent from outdoor action. in there description of a sample tent they claim they are fully checked and guaranteed so for half the rrp i thought it was a good deal. plus vango have had good feedback posted on this site for customer satisfaction witch gave me confidence to purchase.

What are sample tents?   Are these manufacturers samples or do you mean display tents?

They're a kind of prototype tent are sent to a retailer.  Outdoor action are the company selling them.  james 007, I think you've got a good deal.  I'm looking at the Vango Tahiti 500 cotton tent.  The only thing holding me back is that the bedroom area looks massive compared to the living area, but the price is great.

I too ordered the Vango Nile 800 from Outdoor Action. A bargain at half price for a 2008 tent. It arrived today but unfortunately there are poles missing which I am hoping OA will rectify in the next couple of days.

Years ago (and I do mean years) we bought a sample Khyam easy-erect tent - which the salesman thought was a crazy idea.   They weren't available in the shops, and the company had just delivered one for him to 'test'.  I can't remember how much we paid, but know it was peanuts - and it's still going strong!  It's had various 'joint' repairs since, and has faded to a subtle 'mauve', but it's been used in England and Scotland, in France and Spain loads of times for two week holidays, and at festivals, including Glastonbury in the rain.  The only problem now is that the sewn in groundsheet is very thin, and has to be supplemented with another underneath.  It was so good that a few years after buying the first we bought a Khyam Highlander for our younger son which is also still going strong.

That sounds promising then.  Actually I don't need to think about that now because I was looking for a cotton tent & I've been given a Sunncamp Continental 6. This will certainly do us until the new polycotton tents enter the secondhand market,

Swordsman, did you get the missing parts for your Vango Nile 800?  I bought one about three weeks ago from Outdoor Action but I'm having to send it back as the curved roof poles and the inner bedroom tents were missing, and OA say Vango cannot supply them!  It would appear that the tent that we bought was not complete when it left Vango and the parts were never with it anyway!

Yes I did. This tent is pretty unique in it comes in 3 bags: flysheet bag + 2 pole bags. They originally sent me just the flysheet & the roof pole bag (also contains the inner tents). They found and sent the missing pole bag straight away.

The roof poles are steel wheras the Vail it replaces had fiberglass roofpoles. Makes the tent stronger I suppose but it's a very heavy combined package.

I've now semi-erected it, and it is much bigger than I expected. Pitching was a bit of a struggle. The head height seems considerably more than that quoted on the website. Good for me as I'm 6'3". I ran out of time to fully pitch it with guy ropes and inners etc, but I could see no faults in what I saw. Now packed away until next year.

Sometimes the only difference in a sample tent is the coloring of the material used to make it.

There is normally no difference to the ones that go on general sale

As long as they offer you a guarentee or some sort of warranty - why not go for it - especially if you are of limited budget as some of us campers are.

Best of Luck
