Hi All!

Hope you all had a great Christmas & New Year!

I am just after a bit of advice really - we are moving from a very small caravan (which we have out grown - well the kids have, we've stayed the same - lol), and have decided to buy a tent, which the kids are very excited about.

I have no clue what I should be looking for or what would be the best options, tunnel tent, dome tent, frame tent - sewn in ground sheet or seperate ground sheet - porch or not - 4, 6 or more person tent!

We are going to Cornwall in the summer for maybe 2 weeks so needs to be a good family tent.

Has anyone got any advice, comments or definately what not to go for that might give us the heads up.

Would be grateful for any help!!!!

Many thanks

Donna x

gelert lokon vario 6......... big tent, went  away in it last summer, lots of rain, big winds, stood up to it all fantastically. loads of room in it....looked at other tunnel tents since we got it and just don;t think they are as well made , like the fact that they have a "strengthening" bar running down the side of the tent, helped it stand up to the wind etc, didn't move at all. Great tent , really good price , wouldn't swap it for anything  else  on the market!

the list is endless on what you can get but personally i`d go for a tunnel tent as you get more head room through out the tent and a sewn in ground sheet to keep out the drafts but then again who am i to ask i`ve been pulling my hair out for the last 3 months trying to decied on a new one for this year

what i would do is to find a showroom near you that as the tents on display and spend your time looking at them up, cos looking on here will give you some idea.

I would say go for a berth 2 more then you need as they work the berth size out on a standard roll mat not an air bed or camp bed.

I saw a tent on here then went to  showroom got inside it decided the inside wasnt as big as i though it was. I was looking around for hours then got a khyam.

hope you find what you are looking for

another tip would be to get at least one more bedroom than you need if possible it makes an excellent place to store all your luggage and clothing etc

My advice would be to go for a frame tent.

There are usually some good ones on e-bay.  - we got a Sunncamp Gite 5 berth in excellent condition  last year for £40.

The frame tent feels so much sturdier than our old tunnel tent and much warmer as well ! It is easy and quick to put up and has a cooking area which not many polyester tents have.

The only downside is the larger packed size which takes up more room in the car.

Don't go for a cheap tent by a relatively unknown manufacturer. Look at my photos to see what happened to my cheap tent!

If you have been reading on here for a while , you will have seen that some sites are trying to make you pay for 2 pitches because you have a big tent . Look carefully at the shape of your footprint.  I would go for an oblong tent like the Outwell Vermont range rather than a tent that has bedrooms sticking out at every corner.

I love our Wild Country Homestead tunnel but there are a lot of good tents out there that are a lot cheaper.

Hi all!

Thank you for all your comments, much appreciated!

I think we need to go and have a look at a showroom.

Thanks again, always get great advise off you expert campers and also have read comments about kitchen tents, I had thought of that so I shall be looking at that too - soooo much to think about! LOL

It is all down to personal preference really, and budget, so I'd say go and have a mooch around a tent display when they are up and running again for this year, then do a search on here (using the icon at the top of this page) to read reviews etc on the tents you most fancy, which will then give you some idea on quality issues, pitching, manufacturer backup etc.

Best of luck, whatever you decide!
