here you go .  Another tip is to carry a roll of duck / duct tape, you now the really strong grey stuff, it will fix a broken pole temporarily if  you don't have a spare handy.

To follow on from Beefysmum's tip...

To make a temporary repair to a broken or fractured pole section: Take two tent pegs and straighten them with a hammer. Place them along the pole where the break/fracture is. Then bind them securely to the pole with very strong tape (wide grey duct tape is perfect as Beefysmum said).

Hi Pitched in

You can buy the shockcord and a needle all in a kit from places like millets or most camping shops. Its not too bad to do would be easier to get someone to help with the threading it all the way through the poles.  Quite cheap so maybe worth buying a spare kit for next time when at site.

All above advice is spot on, duct tape and some form of splint is a great repair method in the field, then when you get home a more permanent repair is required, as malcolmR said, a shock cord repair kit is readily available at most camping shops and pretty cheap, then you need to replace the broken section like this

  1. Pull out the end tips from the pole. Most tips can be removed by hand, or with a gentle tug using a pair of pliers. (You might be able to remove a stuck metal tip by heating the pole end with a lighter and twisting out the tip.)
  2. If the end tip is thoroughly stuck, stretch the internal shockcord as far as it will go from the opposite end of the pole section, and cut it. You will now also need a replacement pole section with a removable end tip.
  3. Untie the shockcord knotted inside the end tip. You may have to push the knot out of the pole using the piece of wire.
  4. Take the pole sections apart and place them on the floor in order. Replace broken sections with your replacement sections. Re-string the shockcord through all of the sections in their original order, and re-tie the knot.
