I am going it circles and keep changing my mind about which tent to get to replace my Royal Avignon 6+. As I have been happy the Royal tents I was keen on the Royal Bordeaux 6 XL but the OH did not like it as it was blue (apparently not cosy enough).

I seem to keep coming back to the Outwell’s Vermont XL and Idaho XL. I like the Idaho the best (at the moment!) due the very large bed rooms and the dressing area etc.

The thing that troubles me about the Idaho is that I would want to pitch it with the porch to the front especially if adding a porch extension. If the tent was pitched this way round the pitch would need to be over 8m wide!

I would guess that most pitches are longer front to back than they are wide, better suited to the majority of tents with a layout like the Vermont.

Does anyone have any experience of a 'fat' tent, one that is wider than it is long? Is it going to be a problem trying to find a pitch wide enough?

You may be asking why not pitch it the other way round? Well it’s just I would like to sit in / in front of the porch without peering in the side window of a neighbour’s tent, I’m sociable but that’s a little too much even for me!

Lots of tents are 8m wide in both directions, like the diablos and similar shaped ones with pods coming off the central dome. You may have some sites where the pitches are too small , but plenty don't charge extra. There is a long running thread on the campsites forum about which sites take large tents, How about getting a windbreak for privacy?

I have exactly the same issue, I love the Outwell Idaho, we saw an XL yesterday fully kitted out, including a kids room, which is now a must have.

I was considering getting an Idaho L, as it is not quite as wide, but would love an XL.

I have come to the conclusion that I will get an XL, and tell the campsite on teh phone how wide it is, if they dont like it I will just have to find a different campsite. Family tents are getting bigger and bigger so I think campsites will have to become more accomadating, maybe with a small price increase.

I was  impressed with the Idaho. I was really looking forward to seeing it this year. I felt the dressing areas were a good idea however it did not suit what we were after!

The Idaho will be cosy though!!!

We decided to go with the Vermont L after all!!!
