I compared both the Vango Orchy 500 and the Outwell Nevada M this very weekend at Yeoman's show at Calver crossroads. We may want a middle sized tent for touring hols and these are two of the models we are considering. Being a complete tent anorak I spent about 45 mins making detailed comparisons!
The Nevada costs more (199 as opposed to 139) and they look about the same in terms of putting up (Nevada has just three main poles and then a stabiliser one for the roof and an eyebrow one for the rain saver door. The Orchy also has 3 main poles and there are 2 half length poles that hold the roof out.) Both tents are well served with ventilation and light; the Orchy has some skylights, which I particularly liked.
The main differences I spotted are:
1. Poles. The Orchy just has standard fibreglass poles but the Nevada has the ones with an extra layer of coated fibres around for extra strength.
2. Bedroom - the Nevada bedroom is stand up height, the Orchy is not (140cms). Both tents have dividers in the bedroom, but the Orchy is just a loose sheet that toggles in and has gaps around it, where as the Nevada has a proper zip right round.
3. Pack size/weight - The Orchy is quite a bit lighter at just 12kg (Nevada M is 18 or 19kg I think). So the Orchy is also a smaller pack size.
4. Nevada has a rainsaver door on the side - i.e. it has a little porch hood over it, so rain won't drip in. Orchy just has a standard door, and the eyebrow on the front does not protrude far enough out to stop rain dripping in.
Other than that, their floor area is similar in size (though slightly different in shape)and the HH of the flysheets is the same (3000mm). The build quality is similar (apart from the better poles on the Nevada) and both have a full sewn in groundsheet.
Quite frankly I could not make a decision in the end, but for our purposes (touring) the Orchy may be preferable simply because of its smaller weight/size which means I can manage it on my own too, which is an advantage when I take my niece and/or nephew camping with me..
The choice can indeed be a bit bewildering, but both these makes are reputable, and I was looking at them both in the pouring rain at the end of a 2 week display and there was no sign of leaking in either of them.
