We have a lovely big family tent - Killington 900, which we bought to be able to have family holidays throughout the years while the kids are growing (we have 3). It would also accommodate any friends they may want to bring too.
I joined the Camping and Caravanning Club ready for the 2008 season only to find we can't go on any of their sites as the tent is too wide!! Apparently there may be some sites which can fit us on but we would have to phone round them all to find out as they don't highlight which sites offer this service. I have since cancelled the membership as it is a waste of time and money.
Does anyone know of ANY sites that accommodate larger family tents please? Or know of how I can find any. I am beginning to wonder if we are going to get anywhere. It seems mad given the number of large family tents on the market - we can't be the only people in this situation???
Any help gratefully received.

This is always a hotly debated topic - tents are getting larger but pitches are staying the same size, presumably because the more pitches a site has the more money they make!
Alternatively, try looking for sites that don't have marked pitches - often farm sites are able to accommodate larger units as you just pitch in a field and take up as much room as you like!
i have been on to the ccc about this yesterday,as we have a vango diablo 900,they told us the width of their pitches is 5 metres max,and if we wanted to use ours at 1 of their sites we would have to book 2 pitches, which makes it very expensive,we will not be renewing our membership next year,as its not worth it

Thanks everyone for the tips so far and the various queries.
We were told by CCC that pitches were 8m*5m for health and safety reasons???!!! Not quite sure of the logic of that one but hey its what they are going with!!
Shops certainly don't mention that large tents may have a problem finding pitches. Funnily enough we haveb't had any problems with booking our summer holiday in France (Eurocamp Independent were fabulous!) - it just seems to be the Brits that can't cope with bigger tents!
Will check out the site mentioned above and look for farm sites. Ideally I was hoping for sites which had a bit more than just a field as I do like a shower!!!
If I find anything positive on my travels I shall post details so that other can make use of it too.
Hi I was wondering about the CCC pitches also - is that the size the tent needs to be to fit in the pitch - 8mx5m (or smaller)? Surely that can't be the complete pitching area including guys - most family tents are 4-5m wide or more aren't they? Am a bit confused by this..

Yes that is the size of the pitches with CCC I am afraid. When I queried it with them given the number of larger tents these days they just said that they appreciated that tents were getting bigger but that was the size of the pitches for health and safety reasons!!!!
I was informed that some sites do take larger tents in low season but that these are not indicated on the CCC website and I would have to just ring any site I was interested in and see if they did this?!! - like I have the time to ring round God knows how many sites to find ones that do!!!! It would be helpful if CCC had one of their symbols which showed which sites might be able to accommodate larger tents should space/time of season allow.
Check out the link provided by HEJC72 above. Absolutely brilliant list of sites who are not restricted by health and bloody safety (sorry!!)
Yup, the C&CC are a pain when it comes to the size of their pitches if you've a large tent to accomodate. And the thing is, if you've got a large family you need a bigger tent. There are five of us in our family (myself, Bloke and three kids) and I don't consider us a 'large' family but we still need a tent with three beds as daughter will NOT share with her two younger brothers lol! As I wanted to use C&CC sites we bought a long tunnel tent that will fit on their pitches, rather than a dome style with seperate pods. Our Khyam is actually larger than our previous dome tent with three pods anyhow.
The reason they use the 5m max width rule is fire prevention. To prevent fire spreading from unit to unit, the recommended space between units is 6m. This includes 3m of your pitch and 3m of your neighbours, each side. As each pitch is approx 11m wide you need to allow 6m for the fire gap, leaving 5m for your tent (not including guy ropes, etc). I do agree C&CC need to make this clearer when you join, we only found out from these wonderful forums
all the club needs to do is make part of the site tent only,it wouldnt be hard to do,they say they aren't profit making, but it seems that way to us tenters.fair enough tents are bigger, but its the only way some of us can afford a holiday.they should be making it easier for us,not harder

Thanks for clearing that up - not sure whether it's worth joining CCC or not but am certainly looking at buying a tunnel style tent instead of a dome/pod style which we used to have. Seems less restrictive.
