Hello All!

I wonder if I can pick your brains? I'm looking for a tent with very specific features. While I have been able to find tents that do have some of the details, I've yet to locate my 'perfect' tent. Here are my requirements;

It must be a 3 person dome tent
It must have an outer and inner
It must weigh less than 5kg, actually, the lighter the better
It must have a minimum headroom of 115cm - preferably more
It must have a porch with a front opening door
It must have a built-in groundsheet in that porch
It must have a protective 'skirt' around the porch to stop rain/mud getting in

It doesn't feel like I'm asking for too much, but I've looked and looked, and cannot find a tent with ALL of the above.

Please, can anybody out there help me??

Dutchy x

Try giving Outdoor Focus a call.  They have lots of smaller tents and are very knowledgable.

The Eureka BigHorn 3XD plus toggle-in footprint ground sheet would give you everything on your list http://www.tauntonleisure.com/products/big-horn-3xd/677/   I have seen the Eureka tents up and their full footprint groundsheets are excellent, they fit to the fly like a hand in a glove and feel just like a fully sewn in groundsheet.. And its in the sale  - heaven on a stick! MT

It's not a dome, it's a tunnel.

You need to be clearer about the porch g/sheet. Do you mean completely attatched all the way round...which is a full sewn in groundsheet (sig) or do you mean a groundsheet which is attatched only at the bedroom end. I don't think you will find a full sig to the porch with mud flaps as well...you dont need both. The main reason you can't find this tent is that they use the porch area to ventilate the tent. Some  Domes have a detachable Porch g/sheet...like the Gelert Rocky or Tornado 3, or Wynnster Prairie 3...but it will not have mud flaps. You may find something closer with tunnel tents but the weight will be greater.

Hi All!

Many thanks for all your very useful replies; I must say that the Eureka Big Horn does look very interesting.

Erm, I think I mean I'd like a groundsheet in the porch area as well (sorry, not very technical about these sort of things!). My current tent has a small piece of groundsheet that fits into the shape of the porch; is this what's known as a 'footprint'? What I don't want is to be sitting on grass in the porch area.

When my current tent is up, between the ground and the bottom of the porch is a gap of about 3-4inches. As it ALWAYS rains when I go camping, this results in everything stored in the porch area getting wet and/or mud splashed, which is very unpleasant. That's why I'd like the 'skirt' affair around it.

I know I said originally 'dome tent', but really it's all about headroom. As long as there is at least 115cm clearance then it's fine!

Thank you all again for your help!

Dutchy x

What about one of these. Gelert are very good at these sort of tents.

Is the weight critical...are you carrying it? At 9kg the OUTDOOR REVOLUTION STARCAMPER 3 is over your weight, BUT is has great headroom, easy to erect and the porch is totally sealed with a proper sewn in ground sheet and it has mud flaps. Very interesting little tent and well liked by its owners. 3000HH waterproofing also. About £65 - £70 I think.

The footprint groundsheet for the Eureka Bighorn is a groundsheet which sits under the entire area of the tent (under the sleeping  pod as well as under the porch) and is tailored to toggle onto onto the flysheet all the way round to to keep out drafts, mud etc. MT

Hi Merry!

You're talking me into the Eureka BigHorn more and more! It certainly looks like it fits all my specifications.

Hi Shimmy!

Thank you for that, but weight is vital as I will be cycling/backpacking with it, so the lighter the better.

Hi Mrs. Jubbly!

I'm just going to peruse those Gelert tents now. I must admit I like the Gelert brand.

Thanks all for your help!

Have a look at one of the large Fishing Tackle Shops or websites. One or two of the Carp Fishing Tents are close to meeting your requirements. Although, I think it is unlikely to match your target on weight!
