Thinking of buying one of these, but my budget won't stretch to the front canopy or extension this year - has anyone any experience of using the Montana 6 without canopy or extension - I'm a little worried the rain may find its way in without.

Have you looked at the Outwell indiana 6, you can pick up one of last years models new for £199.00 ( some on ebay the other day)to £250 (yeomans) and they incluse a canopy, very similar design as the Montana but never seen any reports of leaks like some on the montys. The front does not slope so uses the space well, may be worth considering. lots of pics and video here
Yes we've used our Montana quite a lot without an extension or canopy. Not a problem. If its heavy rain you can always give up on the front door and use the porch as the main entrance.
We have used the Montana without extension or canopy, as Septic says when it rained the front door is no go, and you have to use the porch, but this isn't really such a big deal. After saving the pennies we got the extension recently and are pleased with it as you can sit out / cook when the weather turns against you. I would strongly advise to get the footprint to protect the SIG £20 well spent though.....and I personally wouldn't be without the carpet but thats another story!!!

The Royal Bordeaux tents are similar to the Montana layouts but include a canopy in the price. May be worth a look at. They also have straight sides so have a lot of internal space. If you look under tent reviews there are loads for the Montana 6 so these may give you more information about using the tent without canopy/extension.
Good for you. We have the carpet and footprint, but I develop selective deafness when my wife mentions the extension. We're away for a fortnight in the first two weeks of August, so may get it before then.

Budget went out of the window!!!
Just got the Montana 6, Front Extension and Carpet for £375 from Go Outdoors using their price match with 10% discount policy
Thats a very good price! We bought a Montana 6 with extension from Yeomans in Ambleside at the weekend and it cost us £429. However, I do prefer to deal face to face when spending that kind of money, then I know should I have any problems its a case of just jumping the car.
Definitely only use the side storm entrance in the rain as the slope of the tent sides means that opening the other doors immediately lets the rain in and onto the SIG. We've used the Monty 6 with and without the front extension, and although we prefer having the front extension in the rain (you're not constrained to just sitting in the tent), it's perfectly usable without - only downside is that if more than one person is trying to get in, you have to queue outside in the rain whilst people remove wet clothing, etc. - front extension removes the need for all that.
