Hi, what is classed as a large tent?  I have heard that some tents aren't accepted in particular campsites due to their size, is there a maximum width or length?

Hi Lisa

I know some sites do not accept tents over 7 metres, but have not had a tent over that size, my biggest tent has been just under 6 metres & i've never had any problem.

Thanks for that Kev, hopefully I should be ok with the size of tents we are looking at then.  They don't go over a maximum of 5m.

I took my oh to the Great Outdoors Store today.  We were going to look at small 3 man tents for me to take the boys away in while my other half is in work.  We have a caravan on the drive but as I only passed my driving test on Wednesday I am unable to tow it.

Anyways - the result was other half wants to get rid of the caravan and upgrade to a tent - how fab is that?  He has never been in a tent before whereas I grew up in them pretty much.  When I mentioned camping in the past he has always pulled a face, I don't know what he imagined them to be like really.

We had a good look around and he was really impressed so we are getting rid of caravan in favour of a tent - WATCH THIS SPACE!!

Thanks for that, I have just had a nose to see the size of your tent, my goodness it's monstrous!  How long does it take to get that up and with how many people helping?

Likabu, Believe it or not it takes approx 1 hour to put up with 1 other person (very easy) and lay out everything inside this includes carpet, blowing up beds, 2 tables, plus kitchen table and stove in the front area.

All in all a very good large tent that actually comes in 3 sizes, mine being the middle size.

Not too bad at all then.  I am trying to compare with sorting the caravan out and putting the awning up (20 minutes).  I suppose one of the (many) real luxuries of having a tent is not having to put a double bed and bunk beds up every night and then put them away again in the morning.

Lisa, congrats on converting the OH. He dosnt know what hes been missing. Outwell Nevada is a good, easy tent to erect, available in 2 sizes, we have the M, XL also available. Takes me about 15 mins to erect by myself (wife is disabled & unable to assist, so have to have a tent that is easy to erect)

Looks a good one Kev.  We have seen a 2007 Vango Vail 500 today and had a good poke aorund in it.  After looking at it's reviews on the internet I have spotted it's successor the Vango Amazon 600.  Altough it's only the 2 of us adults and 2 small (at the moment) boys aged 6 and 3, we are trying to think a bit more longterm and get something that is going to last and not be too small for us 2 years down the line.

It's fab that you can get that tent up in 15 minutes single handed, whatever we get we will have a trial run or 2 in the back garden.  So that we have a rough idea what we are doing and don't end up screaming and shouting at each other on the campsite!

Hi Lisa - the tents that present problems with size tent to be the ones with a central dome and bedroom pods coming off that, thus creating an spread out Y or X shaped footprint that can exceed 7 meters. Tunnel and frame tents are more compact because they are a more simple rectangular shape.

It is always best to know the dimensions of your tent and to ask the site befoe you go if there will be problems with size. It could help avoid diappointment or extra charges.

Hi foggers, no worries there then, we went today for another look around and have come away with a Vango Breckenridge 400 - so excited.
