We came back from Devon on Wednesday and put the tent away in torrential rain so it was soaking wet. OH was told by a friend that with modern tents you can leave them for up to 6 months put away wet before they start to smell or go mouldy so we didn't do anything.
Out of interest I just searched on this forum, and it would seem that that advice may not be correct!
We have just laid it out in the garden but not sure if we should try and erect it properly or if it will be okay laid flat? If it rains again we are planning to fold it up and put away wet still and bring out again maybe on Sunday when weather it supposed to be better.
To complicate the situation, almost all of our poles have a section damaged at the moment (was a bit of a disastrous trip!) so not sure if we could erect it anyway, plus we are selling our house and have a viewing tomorrow night so want the house and garden to look tidy.
Am now worried about what to do - any thoughts/advice please??

As a guide leader we frequently come back with wet camps & would definietly say don't store whilst wet / damp.

Depending on the size of the tent we have:

  • repitched in garden (difficult for you as you say some poles are broken)
  • draped canvas over washing line
  • draped canvas over various items in the garage (incl. wheelie bin)
  • draped canvas over landing rail (admittedly it was only damp rather than dripping)
  • asked parents to take tents home to dry - could you ask someone else if you can use thier garden / garage?

Hope this helps...

You know you've been to camp when....you put your shoes on to go to the toilet in the middle of the night

thanks for your reply - i have just had another look and it is really wet inside too - there are pools of water so we have put a few garden chairs inside to allow a little bit of air to get into it and will have to try and get the poles mended asap i think so we can try and erect next week. just hope it doesnt go mouldy before then - fingers crossed!

After the house viewing, put the tent in the bath or over the shower rail, and just keep turning it. Do you have space in the loft where you could spread it out?
