Hi have spent the last few weeks looking on line and visiting retailers to find our first family tent, we are 4 people 1 small dog, our budget is £250.00 and my final 3 are:

Khyam Ontarion 8 - £199.00 HH5000

Sunncamp Shadow 8 - £199.00 HH2000

Outwell Nevada XL - £249.00 HH3000

I would love some feed back, the only one I have not seen up is the Nevada, I did see the L but found the roof a bit low at the entrance.  should I be worried about the HH, do I need to go high HH for family camping and I am also concerned about the size of these, firstly due to pitching, are they likely to exceed maximum allowance and secondly as this is our first tent are going too big. We would really like 4 rooms, 1 for us, 1 each for the kids (boy & girl) and one for storage.

Any info would be greatly appreciated, I feel like my head is spinning with all the searching.

I've got the Ontario 8 and it really is a super tent. My only improvement points would be, having some material on the inside to put over the windows rather than going outside and no fly mesh on the doors to stop our flying friends from getting in on those hot days!

Can't comment on the others... sorry

Jeff

I have the nevada xl ,and  it's 3 rooms not 4. But for a family of 4 theres plenty of storage space in the bedrooms. I have posted full report in the tent reviews at the top of the page .

Bug mesh on all 3 doors, very quick and easy for beginners. The groundsheet is fully sewn in, which means there are no gaps at the bottom of the doorways, so completely draught free, some sig tents aren't fully enclosed at the bottom of the doors.

.Curtains close from inside the tent. Huge windows, so plenty of light inside. It also has 2 side doors and a back door. great for ventilation on hot days

Very sturdy, tested in the gale force winds in may, stood up when our other tents collapsed.

Excellent quality tent. Better build quality than the shadow,IMO,  but I havent seen a khyam up so can't compare these.(but if the khyam has no bug mesh,it may also have the gap at the bottom of the doors too, Not good if the dog is an escaper)

and curtains close from outside, which is a pain when its raining.

Anything over 2000hh is good.

Its £229 at winfields with a free carpet. The carpet makes a huge difference to the warmth and comfort. its the first time i've had a carpet and I just wouldn't be without it now.

thank you so much for the responses, getting advice from people actually using the tents is so helpful.  We are seriously swaying towards the Outwell and hopefully will get an order in asap.

Thanks again.

Hi Jeme

We are 2 adults and a 13 year old and we were also looking at the Khyam and the Outwell Nevada and after lots of advice on here (especially from Debbie-thanks) decided to go for the Outwell Nevada XL from Winfields as it was the same price as the large on some web sites and you get a free carpet!  We are going to try it the weekend after this one and can't wait! It ticked every box for us as the main things that we wanted were 3 bedrooms, built in groundsheet, and mesh on the outer doors as well as the inners.  Before I bought it I rang round about 10 campsites from different areas and there were only a couple who had a problem with the size of it and were like 'so its an 8 man tent and theres only 3 of you in it! - to me the bigger the better cos its nice having plenty of room and we just won't bother going to the campsites who were funny about it.

Well thank you everyone for your messages, we have now ordered the Nevada XL with the free carpet. It seems to be the favourite all round and now we can't wait for it to arrive and get going.
