Hi all, first post and new camper needing help please!

I have just purchased a Gelert Alaska 8 tent, seems fantastic and managed to pitch it in about two hours which I though was OK for first crack. The problem I have is that the middle black pole and one of the gery poles to the side of it seem to be bowing out too much at the sides. Not a massive problem stability wise, but when it comes to hanging the pods, there seems to be too much slack at the top and the sides are under too much tension. I have tried adjusting, repegging etc but nothing I do is affecting this, has anyone else experienced this and can someone offer advice. Thanks in advance, Bill.

hi Bill, and welcome to the site.

if i'm interpreting this right, the tent is too low and too wide for the bedroom to sit properly? yes?

does the tent have tension straps inside , running along the ground? can you tighten these to pull the tent poles  in closer together ? this would make it narrower and higher.

Hi,

Yes it has straps but they do not seem to be adjustable. Also pulling them in at the bottom might only serve to make it look odder. As it stands the bottom seems to be at the correct width but then instead of the poles going up vertically then over in an arch, they bow outwards. The best way I can describe it is as if something is sitting on top of the tent forcing the top down and the sides out but with out moving the poles in relation to the ground. Hope this makes sense, there's probably a proper camping term for it!

I have the Alaska 6 and i pull the tension straps ( located near the pin that goes into the bottom of the pole) as tight as possible, this does give the poles a more 'hooped look' rather than having straight sides but it doesn't effect stability and it's a great tent in the wind and rain.( gale force wind at Normans bay last week proves that! ).
You also need to make sure the poles are evenly located in the sleeve, not having more pole exposed on one side than the other.

Cheers
Ryan.

Just got back from our week at Park Foot, we used our Gelert Alaska 8 for the first time ....

Took us (2 adults) about 1 hour to pitch it, i do know what you mean about the tension on the inner pods, so i un pegged the grey poles and pushed them further inwards and this did seem to sort out the problem ...

Must say we was very happy with the tent ... just got to dry it out now after de camping in heavy rain ....

Thanks for the tips guys, I think you may be spot on about getting the poles even Ryan and Cubby. Still managed to camp out last night (backyard) to satisfy the boys, in what must have been one of the worst storms I have experienced. Apart from he fact I had forgotten to peg out the mudflaps the tent stood up very very well. Dry as a bone this morning, one guy rope loose but l intact.

Probably try and get somewhere next weekend for a proper run and a bit more space to pitch properly.

Thank you all.

Dude, this video is worth seeing. Shows a pitching of a similar tent, and was posted on the boards for Horizon 8 (the 2008 version of the Alaska 8 , the main difference being a SIG which most people say is the only if any fault with the alaska 8) - http://www.khyam.co.uk/video.asp?video=indiana8tc&product=Indiana 8 TC&width=640&alt=480

Horizon 8 is 100 gbp more than the alaska 8 on sale at best i can see anywhere - you do the math...... :-)

Thanks Skeeter, I think we may have found the solution by making sure the poles are exactly middled through the tent. Otherwise when the tent is erected it cannot centre itself. Not had the weather to have another go yet. Thanks for the info on the Khyam video though, had a look and it seems helpful.

We pitched in the middle of 3 days of solid, heavy rain in north devon in the last week. The tent held up just fine, a few drips appearing on the center seam where the elastic to hook on the bedroom "pods" were - but only enough to drip, then evaporate not pool up. The wierd thing was, when we packed up condensation started forming in the interior main room, and then either condensation/drips appears when we loosened the guy ropes and opened up the tent for downing/folding up. It was like when we loosened off the tension the whole thing started leaking or condensation formed and dripped. Its weird cos under heavy rain/winds and hard hits the tent was sound as and no problems. Anyone got any ideas on this phenomena? also recommendations on tape seam sealant that woould help on the single drip point?

Overall tho its a very easy and clever tent - especially the pod setup. Mudflaps on the edges we couldnt work out if they were meant to go inward or outward - then saw another camper with a Horizon8 pegged outward and worked it out. Hopefully thats the right direction - seemed to work ok.

Overall couldnt really ask for more. The lack of SIG is the only issue - but as it happens, in the windy conditions it worked out better as we got ventalation...etc.. without needing to open up the window flaps...etc...
