Hi,

A big hello to everyone, this is my first post and I hope you'll go easy on me

I guess I'm classed as a newbie, since it's been 20 years since I last went camping and tents seem to have changed a bit. I've got a Montana 6 and we're heading to the C&CC site at Scarborough on the 27th August. I've been made aware of an issue with the porch taking the width over the 5M allowed for an EHU pitch. Is it possible to erect the tent and leave the porch down? If not, does anyone have any experience of setting up this tent at this site, and be able to offer any advice?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers, Andy

Thanks for the quick reply.

I had a look at those threads, though wasn't quite sure if it was possible to pitch the Montana without. I haven't set mine up yet as I'm waiting for a footprint groundsheet to arrive, but have looked at it at Yeomans and wasn't sure how you'd actually do it.

I'm hoping to do a test pitch in the garden next week sometime so hopefully can figure something out.

When I rang the C&CC site in question, I mentioned the porch and asked if a slightly larger or end pitch was available but was told bluntly that 5M was the limit. As previously stated by others, 250mm is neither here nor there if a tent is on fire. I wish common sense was used sometimes but have more than enough experience of these type of issues though work. We now have signs on all staircases (even 3 steps) that say, "Warning, Stairs. Please hold the hand rails". Yet the same areas cannot be accessed by wheelchairs, which when mentioned is met with the same incredulity used by everyone viewing the stair signs. <End Rant>

Yes it is possible to pitch your monty without the side porch, the only problem is it will make some noise if the wind picks up. Not pitching the porch makes no difference to the stability of the tent.

the thing that makes me laugh is the c&cc were using this tent as one of there long term test tents and it was ticking all the right boxes untill sombody realized it was to big for the standard pitch size

I now have a vision of all the site wardens patroling the sites looking for monty 6s owners to pounce on

The reason for the C&C Club maximum unit size (which is 9m x 5m) is that so no matter what size caravan + awning you have got it will fit in those requirements, and anyone one with a large tent cannot fit those requirements.I don't know why they have the 'camping' part in their address,it should be the caravan club mk11.
I am not anti C&C Club by the way(we have been members for 14 years)I just think it is common sense gone mad.

I have to agree, it seems to me as far as the Camping and Caravan Club is concerned you can pitch as tent as long as it is under a specific size. This is NOT fair as far as a Montana is concerned as it is a moteratetly sized family tent, I could understand if the footprint was massive.

Look at some of the caravan and awing sizes?? If this continues to be an issue you are right they should just take the camping out of the title and be another caravan club.

My experience with this club has been varied but I am seriously not going to renew my mebership next year.

I booked a pitch 3 weeks ago at a specific site adn booked a caravan with awning pitch but because I was a tent they completly ignored this request and put us on a normal grass pitch, what is the point.

As regards to the Montana side porch, like you say Irn Bru the footprint for it is tiny.
What about campers who have caravan, awning and pup tent. The pup tent takes up a bigger footprint than the Montana.
Why if the pitch size is 9x5 (45 sq m) can it not be more flexible.ie,7x6.5 or 8x5.5 etc.
There's too many tape measures and not enough common sense used IMO.

Good morning everyone and thanks for your replies.

I originally decided on a C&CC site for our first outing as my wife is very new to camping and extremely apprehensive. I hope that long term, we will be able to shop around a bit more and find sites that are more flexible. It's either that or taking the kids on my own (which occasionally crosses my mind  ).  I also hope that the C&CC will see sense and start providing slightly larger or more flexibly costed pitches.

Cheers, Andy

What about going somewhere else?  There are lots of absolutely wonderful independent sites where the owners wouldn't be waving a tape measure at you.  Take a look at the campsite reviews on here if your wife is apprehensive.  You can get a good measure of a site by the reviews of UK campsite members.

Hi Michelle,

Great minds think alike! That was my first idea and I went through quite a few dozen reviews and contacted a few sites. Ideally, I wanted a pool on-site or nearby for the kids. The problem was, all the ones that had pools said they wanted 7 nights min, even though I only wanted 3/4. The ones I found with places and would accept my 3/4 booking had only average reviews. It's my fault really as I left it till the last minute to start looking. Hopefully I'll be able to put more time into finding the next one. I haven't had chance to have a good look at it, but I was wondering if, in the future, the Porch could be modded (professionally or otherwise) to lose 250mm but still be functional?

I notice you have a Monty; are you pleased with it or do you wish you'd gone for something else? The kids room is down to £30 at Yeomans and it looks pretty cool. I can see myself laying there shooting a few hoops..... Oh, apparently it's for the kids, not to keep them out! might have to get two then.

Cheers, Andy

Thanks Keith, I'll bear this in mind. If it's chucking it down, I'll put it up anyway as the rain will put out any fires

Hi Andy, we are really pleased with our Montana.  This is our third year with it - had a smaller canvas tent before - and we've yet to see a tent that ticks as many boxes for us.  (If they made a canvas one with exactly the same layout we might be tempted!)  The layout really works for us with two boys.  There's loads of space for everything.  All the cooking stuff goes in the extension and the loo (bucket with lid!) goes in the side porch (when you're allowed to use your side porch!).  We also have the carpet which makes a big difference if you go camping in the spring.

We haven't seen the kids rooms on show anywhere.  I daren't tell the boys about it!  They'll want one!
