The cord is stiff enough that you can just poke it down the centre of the hole. Make sure it's a clean end though, or tape it round with a tiny bit of sticky tape.
I.m sure the manufacturers have a set ratio of cord to pole, but for your average camper, a bit of cord that's long enough to allow the pole set to fold up easily is good enough. It's not a structural thing, after all, but just to keep the pole sections together for easy handling. You can even use a pole without the cord, if you just happen to break it while pitching the tent.
