I don't quite understand why there is an issue with pitch size when it comes to tents. Friends of mine have a Cabanon TT and it's massive. If a site will accept a caravan, camper of TT, then what is the issue with a 7m x 5m tent?

A 7m x 5m tent with a retangular footprint would rarely encounter a problem fitting onto an average pitch. The trouble is with the more sprawling dome tents, which can start at a modest 6.5m x 6.5m (ie my 12-man Vango Colorado 1200dlx, on the smaller end of the nominal 12 man domes) and going up to 11m x 11m or more. Pitches tent to be square, yup, but if you're aiming for a 3m gap round the back and sides of a pitch (the front is usually exempt from this boundary rule) then you end up with a rectangular permitted pitching area in the centre, and this is less suitable for dome tents.
Moral of the tale is to buy a tent with a rectangular foortprint, and you'll find it fits on more pitches than a comparable berth-size dome tent.

It has something to do with the shape of may of the dome tents, which have a central dome, and then pods sticking out at various angles around the dome. Then you have the guy ropes to support the pods taking up more space. These can all take up a considerable amount of spaces. Where as something like a TT is rectangular, and despite frequently offering more space, can actually take up less pitch space. If you look at some of the tents with the central domes, and then pods - a lot of space is lost between the domes - yet this still takes up pitch space.
I know exactly what you mean. Up until this year we had a Wynnster Satellite 12. We used to spend at least 10 minutes running around in circles trying to find the best position for the three pods whilst trying to avoid holes, bumps and overlaps.
There's also the question of guys. The big dome tents have an awful lot of guys extending a metre or more beyond the actual footprint, whereas caravan awnings and trailer tents are usually held by pegging points at the bottom of the sidewalls.

there is also a problem with the camping and caravanning club in that a max size of 5metres applies on there sites,if you have a larger size tent width then you have to phone site direct to see if they can fit you in
