New to the forum and camping this year. Have had a number of fantastic trips this year and have decided to lay out for a proper tent. I have decided on the Outwell Idaho XL.....or so I thought!
A friend of mine (a more seasoned camper) tells me that a number of campsites are now refusing to allow tents of this size on and that they should be avoided - Outwells in particular. I have done some initial enquiries and haven't found any sites that have refused but was hoping for a view from the wider community?
Any help would be greatly appreciated,
Ian

We have a Nebraska XXl which is bigger than the idaho. The campsites we've gone to we have never had a problem. There is a link on here to campsites that will accept large tents. I would never go back to a little tent, love all the living space especially as we are reliant on the British weather.
If you wanted to go on a Camping and caravanning site you need to contact the sie direct, you couldn't book online. we have one but as we don't use EHU we've been ok, and to be honest just as someone else posted on another thread, it didn't look that big or out of place when we have been.
Personally altougth there has been many debates on this I don't have a problem for paying more for a pitch as we chose a larger tent, you wouldn't get a 2 bed terraced for the same price as a 4 bedroomed detached would you?

If that is the tent you would like then go for it - there are lots of sites out there that will accept whatever size tent - book those.
We always say what the tent is when booking a site and if they say ithe tent's too big and want to charge extra then we decide if we really want that site or look around for another in the area that won't.
Having a teeny tent is handy for being squeezed in at the last moment, but I'm a solo camper so usually get charged as much as a family so I'm blowed if I'm going to use a small tent.
My August trip was to a site with mostly fixed 9x9 metre pitches (the site was 50 percent Caravan Club, but I believe this is the standard C&CC size pitch)
... so I paid the same for my 5.23 x 3 metre Khyam (15.69 sq M) as the people next to me did for their 6.65 x 4.2 metre Bear Lake 6. (27.93 sq M)
Guess which tent I have in mind for my long stays once I've established how to put it up by myself ?
The Khyam goes up so easily I can't see any point in having anything smaller as a weekend tent.
.
The last site we used charged you double pitch if the unit was bigger than 5 x 5 sq. m.
I take it then that that eliminates the Idaho L (28m2) and XL, but the Montana 6 is ok through the skin of it's teeth at 25m2 if you want a standard pitch?

We bought alrge tent, Hartford XL because we wanted plenty of living space and if you are going to spending time insie then do it in comfort rather than being crapmepd. You can get large tents that will fit a standard pitch but as people have said before most sites will take your booking. We always state what type of tent we have and haven't had any problems.
Thanks for all of your comments - the message I am getting is:
shouldn't be a problem, be up front when you book the site on the dimensions and decide if the site turns you away whether that is the only suitable site!
I'm off to get my Idaho!
If anyone has any additions to this rumour then please let me/us know otherwise enjoy the rest of 08 and bring on the summer of 09...
lol Keely you took the words right out of my mouth!!!!
We were recently charged extra for our Khyam XL as it was larger than 10' by 12', it was only a couple of pound a night more but we were on the same sized pitch as those with smaller tents so I don't really see why it was extra. Mind you, having said that we then weren't charged for the gazebo that we put up to use as a porch!
I have a friend with the big outwell and he's never been refused entry but has been charged extra.
