I have one of these tents and so far no heavy weather and I am very happy with it.

A storm guy kit is available as an accessary but as the tent is so well guyed where should these additional guys be fitted to stabilise the tent in high winds.Has anyone had experience of the best place to put them.

I would be interested to know too.

I wonder if it's just being advertised carelessly. ?

Hi Geoff, the storm guy kit is not for your style of tent it is for the smaller tents with the thinner poles ie the freelander and igloo etc, your tent should be ok and I use steel deltas on my tri-guys.

Deltas, and possibly a safety loop over each knee joint just in case. I reckon mine would have been fine but for that omission.

Yep - bridging the joint in some way once the tent is up.

I'm guessing that the double guying in the middle is partly designed to gope with a failing joint .. possibly the plastic hooks on the upper sections too.

But looking at that video (taken perhaps an hour before the tent collapsed) you'd have thought that it was the joint on the right that might fail ..
The spring in the joint makes things worse and forces the pole sections apart.

It's been so difficult to pin down the chain of events.
Quite likely it was just a dud joint.

Well if its a dud joint I've been terribly unlucky.  I've replaced one pole  and 2 joints this season.  Went away this weekend, 3 more joints gone!  I'm not convinced that they've designed the tents right and I've decided to give up with mine.  I'm salvaging the poles in case anyone on here wants them, selling the accessories and making capes for my family out of the tent material (with "this is all my £300+ tent was good for" emblazoned across the back)

How did the joints / pole fail ?

Mine put up with a lot of battering before one joint failed - I'm fairly confident I have a fix to prevent pole failure again ...

We went out for the day so I'm not entirely sure what happened.  Returned to a collapsed wreck.  I can't imagine that it was very windy during the day as we were only 10 miles away and it was freezing cold but the air was still. It wasn't windy when we set off nor on our return.  We were well sheltered by a grass bank one side, a hedge another and caravans the other two.  No other units had any wind damage

I suspect that one knee broke, followed by another, which is not unexpected given that it was left for 7 hours.  Then the strain of that umst have broken a shoulder joint.  The guys were all still frimly attached and pegged in.

On the plus sude, if we hadn't packed the broken mess away mid-afternoon yesterday and all squeezed into my parents campervan, we would have woken up in a huge puddle.  The C&CC site at Boroughbridge was evacuated this morning due to rising river levels.  Our tent pitch backed onto a duckpond by 8am this morning.

I have absolutely no confidence in the tents ability to stand up to the elements.

it seems to me, from reading about what happened to louisa and sam, that the khyam XL is doomed if a chain reaction, in the integrated pole system,  is started :(

We have camped in some very windy weather, on a steep slope, and survived.

We tend not to go out together for the whole day, once we are settled on site and luckily we were there when a delta peg came out  and the situation became very precarious.

On another occasion i arrived back just in time to find my husband wrestling with a big rip in the annexe (i had put our brolly up when it was wet but not windy and forgotten to tie it down). So if anybody is selling an XL annexe .........
