My bro in law has decided that he wants a Bear lake 4. He has seen one at Yeomans for £499. Has anyone got any knowledge of the tent, or know where its cheaper? He knows that the 6 is better value but its just too big for him. All help and advice much appreciated. Also, why go for cotton? Do you have to treat it differently?

hi, I have just bought the Bear Lake 6 and we absolutely love it, a quick google search will find you the B.L 4 for maybe £10 cheaper but I would advise to go for the B.L 6 as you can get it for around £490, you can never have too much space and the pack size and weight do not go up that much between the models. The polycotton material i found straight away felt very strong and high quality, it also insulates better and has better sound insulation. We used it recently on family holiday to devon, the weather was terrible, but the tent never moved or leaked, wihle many others packed up and went home. New to camping myself so not sure about treating the polycotton material any different to others.

Another view might be:
A bigger tent means a bigger space to warm if its cold and more to dry off its wet. Its a temptation to take more and more stuff along to fill it up just because you can, then you find you and your holiday are drowning in stuff. A bigger tent is heavier to lift, carry, erect and take down. It may have more poles and it will need more pegging and unpegging. It will take up more room in your car and in storage at home. It will need a bigger space to dry it off in if you bring it home wet.
No problems with big tents, but it is quite possible to buy a tent which is bigger than you want/need and less enjoyable because of that. The trick is to work out what size will bring ultimate camping bliss for you and yours and find the tent to suit. Sounds easy doesn't it! MT

We had a similar dilemma. We are a family of 2 adults and 2 young kids and we thought that the Bear lake 4 would be too small, (no room in bedrooms for clothes etc) Bear lake 6 bit too large. (as wanting to downsize from a Diablo 600 that was very roomy but I found that the family were staying inside the tent too much even when it was fine!) In the end we plumped for the Wolf Lake 5 and space wise this has been great. Wolf lakes are more pricey but so worth it.
The advantages of polycotton has already been mentioned. The only thing that we have to do more digilently (not differently) is make sure its dry before packing away.
