Hi,we have persuaded our Brother in law & his family to try camping, however only one drawback NO TENT or anything else for that matter, the total budget will be around £100 for a tent and sleeping stuff! I had a look at the Argos package but thats for 4 and their is only 3 of them so seems a bit of a waste!
Can anyone on here recommend anything?

My first reaction is that they are working to a VERY small budget for a tent AND sleeping stuff for three. Two things you do not want to skimp on are the thing that is meant to keep the elements out and the thing that's mant to keep the warmth in.
I would suggest that the entire £100.00 goes on a second hand tent. There is a frame tent on ebay currently at £25.00 which if it ends up going for under £100.00 would be a bargain indeed but be prepared to do a bit of repair work.
Presumably for their first time you will be taking your brother in law's family camping with you? In which case cooking stuff won't be a problem as you have it already. Quilts and blankets off the beds at home will be fine both under and above. If the budget runs to cheap closed cell foam mats they should all be snug enough!
I would only buy these cheap deals in extremis, you really do get what you pay for. A good deal of the stuff folks on here (and indeed myself in recent years) seem to regard as camping sine qua non, you can well do without but it's worth getting the best you can and you'll get better value if you go for second hand.
For me, part of the point in camping is living in a different environment from my day to day environment and it's surprising that doing without stuff like computers, central heating, television etc. is all part of the attraction.
The first time I took my daughters camping we had no money and the three of us crammed into a little two person ridge tent for a week and we had only basic cooking stuff but we had a great time!
Even nowadays when money is no problem (within reason) I am very careful about what I buy because it's so easy to end up with a car load of stuff that looks good in the shop but is actually of no particular use!
The most important thing your brother in law and his family will need if thay are not experienced at camping are open minds and a willingness to learn to adapt themselves to a different environment, especially if it ends up pouring with rain. These skills take time and patience but with the right atitude are fun to learn!
They will need also a lot of help from yourself.
Hope all goes well for them and they get the camping bug.
I know it is a very small budget, but they are not sure if they are going to take to it or not so don't want to be spending a small fortune and then it going to waste! It is only for the weekend to try it out, if it was to be slightly more I am sure they would strech but we are not talking hundreds more!

Is there anyone they know who can loan them stuff, or could you take them camping in your big tent with yourself in a "pup" tent to give them a "taster?
There are risks in buying cheap inadequate stuff to "see if they take to it." Cheap stuff feels cheap and particularly if you get adverse conditions, could well put them off: if they beg or borrow better stuff it will give them a better experience and they may take it up!
Good stuff and expensive stuff aren't necessarily the same thing, imagination, shopping around and looking for good second hand stuff is the way to go!
There isn't enough room in our tent for the 3 of them, although our is a 6 berth it will only take 5 at a push. Either way we would still need to get a pup tent and the idea was that if they did like they could maybe go themselves at some stage, this is really just to start them out! Our tent was a bargain buy last year for £100 so I guess it was something like that I was after although not as big, if that makes sense! I know you might end up spending more in the long run but if it gives them the general idea! To be honest if totally inclement would prob just come home!
You could look at the Easycamp Milano it is specified as a 5 person tent but would really comfortably fit 3, it is for sale on winfields (and other sites) for around £70. You can stand up in this tent and will have room for any storage etc We have one that we use for weekends and find it is an ideal size for short camping trips. If your brother in law decides he does like the camping concept (must be mad if he don't) he can always hold onto the tent and add a dayroom for cooking and dining etc at a later date. As Rik suggested he could always take quilts and pillows from home and spend the other £25-£30 on air beds/ foam mats and a lantern. Hope this helps

How about something like this for the tent if they are sharing cooking stuff with you, they only need to have somewhere to sleep to start with. ebay item no 350154007709
They could then spend the money they saved on the tent on decent double airbed (all 3 could share) taking a good duvet and blanket for the bed.
Basically get a small tent to see if they like it and they can upgrade the tent if they do, or sell it on if they dont.....not too much lost then!! This tent would always come in useful as a pup tent for the kids as they get older.
When we started camping, we borrowed a tent to see if we liked it, and turned out we did!!
They really should get the best tent they can afford, (within reason of course) and a decent 2nd hand tent that has been tried and tested may well be a much better option than a new cheap one. As has been stated on here quite rightly many times in the past, one thing guaranteed to put them off camping is being stuck in awful weather in a tent that is not up to the job.
Not sure what this tent is like but it has a 2000HH. They could then use their duvets of the bed and places like argos and Tesco sell cheap airbeds. Like has been said you cannot put a price on staying dry and keeping warm and this would definitely where I'd put MY money. Failing that have they tried beg, borrow, stop short of steal though. Good luck, it's a tight budget and I'd be interested to see how they get on.
------------- If you have a problem stressing you, sort it. If you can't, there's no point worrying about it coz it won't make a blind bit of difference!!!! Jules

my first tent last year was a set from asda. 2 sleep bags, 2 chairs and three person tent rrp £40 and ended p being reduced to £20!
It kept the elements out, but the condensation being a small single skinned tent was pretty horrendous (first job in the morning was to wipe the inside of the tent with kitchen towel! Apart from that we got a ehu, sandwich toaster and a kettle and we loved it! Quilt on the floor at night with sleeping matts underneath and an extra quilt over the top (all from home).
Should be time for them coming into stock soon as its almost camping time!
Downside is that once you have used this set once is that you will probably have to repurchase everything again (as we did). But for a smapler should be fine :)
Just bear in mind the more expensive you get with tents - the more living space, the more rigidity, the more protection from the elements you get.
