We are trying to decide whether to purchase a Vermont L or XL.

Please can someone let us know if the sleeping compartment for the L can be opened up to be one large sleeping area of full width? We have two boys under 5 and would rather have us all sleeping in one compartment until they are a bit older.

Any other comments regarding transporting, putting up, and fitting on campsite pitches would be helpful too!

Thanks.

I think you'll find that the sleeping compartment of the L opens into one large space.  The XL has an extra (separate) sleeping compartment that could be used for storage.  In our XL we slept on our double bed in the middle, and each of the kids had a bedroom either side of us, one of which could have been unzipped to open up the space.

We have now bought a caravan and you'll find our XL, together with the side extension and footprint, advertised in the free adverts above.

in the 2008 models of the xl all 3 bedrooms can be now opened up into one big room. There is a curtain between the left side room and the larger middle room and then a zip between the right side room and the middle room. I think on midge21's xl version from before 2008 the right side bedroom was completely seperate, and on even older vermonts there was a very odd configuration of a 2 person room, conected to a 4 person room and then a very hard to use 1 person seperate pod opon the end. Worth considering if you are thinking of buying a second hand older model vermont.
hope this helps,
Claud

Thank you both for your replies. It is very helpful to be aware of the differences between the models.

Lucy

Think very carefully before you buy a Vermont.  Although lots of people love theirs we had an awful time with ours.  It was destroyed the first time it was used. The wind got up and wrecked it.  It took sixteen people to help us get it down safely.  Its a nightmare to put up.  Because the fabric is so large and light weight it takes off like a large paracute.  Even when delta pegged in the ground if it gets windy you can feel it lifting and it gets so noisy flapping about even in just a breezy day.  Yes the space inside is fab and very practical but for us it was £500 down the pan.  We now have a Norfolk Lake and although it nearly broke the bank buying it I'm so gad we did. The heavier fabric weights it down so it goes up like a dream.  It is solid and I know it is not going to take off.  There is no noise either.  It stays warm and cosy in bad weather and cool in the heat.  It is a bit narrower than the Vermont but much more user friendly.[:)]
