I brought a Monty 6 with extension, for my wife & 3 kids (aged 5 and under), but then on Saturday at the NEC Outdoor Show came across the Vermont XL, and am now wondering, have I made a mistake in getting the Monty?

The Vermont XL is £200 more expensive, but I like the way it's laid out, and it does have more space, even though our kids are only very small. The trouble is I've already got the Monty 6, extension, carpet & travel wardrobe, and don't know whether it's worth the bother a) trying to get a refund b) really worth changing the Monty 6 for the Vermont XL.

I'd stick with what you've got and if you think you want something bigger next year you'll be able to get a good price for your Montana which is always in demand second hand, and you can trade up and get a new tent.

The Monty is 13kg lighter and I guess with kids that age you'll be taking loads of kit with you, so the saved space in the car is good.

Once you start thinking 'maybe I should have chosen that' it never ends because there are so many choices out there! Next year you'll be thinking 'maybe I should have gone for polycotton' and you'll end up getting a Wolf Lake 7.

The Monty is good for you needs, enjoy it!

Thanks for your advice - I think it is was I needed to hear, and yes I did think about the Wolf Lake 7. The trouble is I sent out thinking about getting a Gelert Zenith 6 which was only sale for £150 over Christmas, and ended up paying twice that amount for the Monty 6, which I prefered (although still a bargain compared to the price it's been sold at now).

No mistake made, you will be delighted with your monty, we have had the monty and the vermont xl, we used the monty for a couple of years with no problems at all, then the vermont came out had to have it, sold our monty only losing about seventy pounds, very popular tent. I was made an offer to sell the vermont for a very good price, the only other tent for me would be the wolf lake 7 but the £1000 price tag puts me off.

I think you should stick with the Monty too then next year when you have decided that you really enjoy camping then you could consider trading up to the Vermont. You will still get a good price for you Monty because they are a popular tent with families.

Bear Lake 6 or the Wolf Lake 7 would be the next step up though but as crappie says the price tags are a little frightening unless you pick up a good bargain at the end of this season.

There will always be another tent to covet??
The monty is a fab tent and will last you for a couple of years while you save up for the next. It is addictive and should come with a health and financial warning.

I'd say go with whatever your gut instinct tells you is the best tent for you....

And even then it'll be wrong!

I have the smaller Vermont M, but the XL is really, really big.

I ruled it out because of its size and the storage and weight, a bit OTT for my own requirements.

Had I already a Monty 6 I certainly wouldn't go to the trouble os trying to swap. Yours is a fine tent.

I'd stick to the Monty - as I've found the Monty is already the absolute maximum size that some of  the popular child friendly sites will take.  I think when your children get a bit older you probably will need the extra space of a WL or BL or even the Vermont or such like but as the kids are so young you have yourself a great family tent!

Go Out Doors are selling the Outwell Montana 6 Tent Front Canopy for £75 (http://www.ukcampsite.co.uk/redirect.asp?redir=http://www.gooutdoors.co.uk/outwell-montana-6-tent-front-canopy/CORETCFE290155), but I suspect you want the full extension (worth having, as it gives proper shelter if the weather is poor).

The front extension is on sale for £110 at http://www.worldofcamping.co.uk/shop/Detail.asp?ProductID=1677 but I don't know what they charge for delivery.

Have you tried ebay?
