I had a look around a Vango Icarus 500 yesterday, and thought it was a great little tent. As with all tunnels, it will be pretty simple to pitch and especially as all three poles are the same length. It has good headroom, impressive bedroom inners (which stay attached) and a SIG. The divider is only a curtain partition, though, and not a zip up affair as per makes such as Outwell. This model has the Vango tension band system. Overall, it looked a well put together small tent, which was light and bright inside and very smart.

I'd recommend you try to see one in the flesh, if you are thinking of buying.

What do you mean Liddenham when you say "Stay attached" Does that mean you can leave them up when you put the tent away or have I asked a very seriously silly question?

Just got back from Silverdale with my new Icarus 500. Put it up with the the mrs in the wind and took less than 20 mins. Its dead dead simple. 3 poles and bosh you are done. We have the canopy extension as well but that only took a few mins. Its a smashing tent!

I've just come back from my first camp with the Icarus 500.

Yes, the sleeping pod does stay attached, even when you pack it away so it isn't a silly question at all. It is my belief (but I could be wrong) that in the bigger version (Icarus 600) the bedroom pod is attached after pitching and removed before packing (the pitching video on youtube certainly has it that way) and I would imagine that it's due to the heavier load the poles have to push agains't should the pod remain in. But in the 500 the whole thing is put up in one go, which makes it very easy and quick to pitch. It wouldn't be possible to remove the pod in the 500 as the groundsheet is all one with a divider sown across the middle of it (between bedroom and livingroom).

My first thoughts, having spent the weekend in this tent, is that it is very well designed and very roomy inside, but there's only three of us in my party (me and a 12 and a 13 year old. We filled it to capacity and on the 2nd night my eldest slept in a pup tent. The resulting space in the bedroom, with inner removed, was brilliant. Plenty of space and very airy.

I think this tent would be ok for 4 if 2 of them were small kids, and as a weekend tent. 4 people would really need something alot bigger for a longer stay.

We purchased this tent as our very first tent last year and we have not been let down by it at all. It withstood some very windy conditions in Anglesey last year !!! Easy to put up and take down. We are a family of 4 inc 2 children. We let the children sleep in the bedroom pods ( 1 each pod otherwise they would kill each other !!! ) and me and the hubby sleep in the main living area on our sofa bed. Plenty of room for all 4 of us. Plus we have the canopy which makes a big difference.

We purchased the vango Icarus last year, What a fantastic buy. Really recommend it. Take a look at the tent reviews on here. The only query was the front door had a tendency to leek in rain and windy weather, easily resovled by putting strong velcro patches on the inside of the tent. Problem solved.

Happy camping

The Icarus 500 was a best seller last year, and this year will be even better I think.

The amount of tent you get for the price is truly amazing. Whilst it doesn't have all the "bells 'n' whistles" found on some other tents you can forgive it for that given the price. They also have TBS (Tension Band System I think) which is a very simple, but clever, method for dealing with strong winds that could distort the poles too much.

Try to get to some tent displays near you, the Icarus is very popular. It also has a decent set of extras like canopy, carpet etc.

Just got back from from our first camp with the Icarus 500.

I managed to pitch it in about 25 mins on my own. My only concern was when I was trying to locate the pole end into the ring & pin, the fibre glass poles started to make a noise like it was going to break, however all was fine. I decided that before I took the tent down I would detach the bedroom pods so that next time I pitch there would be less weight on the rear poles ( I might invest in spare poles as a precaution as well).

Once up though I can only say that I was more than pleased with the tent. There was plenty of room as there were only three of us,(myself with 2 kids aged 7 & 12), four people would be the max I would suggest before it became cramped.
The living area was quite adaquate. I purchased the sun canopy but did not use it on this trip as I just used the front door as an over head canopy using the king poles that had to be bought separately & a wind break for a cooking area.

We didn't have any wind, so I cannot comment on the stablity of the tent but reading the reviews the TBS system seems to work very well.

For the money I think this is a great tent for weekend trips or longer and can't wait for our next camp.

That sounds all too familiar, I heard the very same noises when I pitched mine first time, and my pole actually broke when a gust of wind blew as I was taking the tent down. Wise words regarding taking down the bedroom pods before taking the tent down, I also as a precaution open the front & side doors before pitching/taking down the icarus to enable any winds that might decide to have a laugh to blow through the tent rather than flatten it!

Hi The Long Family
we are a family of four, 2 adults and 2 kids under 5. We too were looking for a 2nd tent (our Vermont L is a bit big for a night or 2!), we looked at the Icarus 500, but went for an Outwell Virginia 5 in the end. They are only stocked by Yeomans, and are a bit more expensive than the Icarus but they are much lighter inside with the curtains open, both doors have a separate mesh door and there is a canopy over the side door to stop the water running into the tent. Virginia 5 review

Hello Fernsider,
prob silly question - quite a few people have mentioned these self adhesive velcro patches to improve the front door "sealability" of the Icarus 500 - where did you buy yours?

I bought my Icarus in Jan, and after reading the reviews, I decided to by some double sided velcro tape as a precaution. I managed to get some from a local hardware shop. I haven't used it though as there is a toggle strap on both doors on the tent that I have. However, I have only used the tent once so far and it was not windy when we camped.

Hi Norbert 57

We bought the sticky patches from the local B & Q. Make sure they are the large sized ones, made by Velcro.

Happy camping
