Been looking at tents ovet the last week or so with the aim of buying over the next week or so.

have seen lots of Gelert, Outwell and Vango tents, but been a complete novice they all look very much alike , but does one offer better build , quality or have a better reputation than the others.

What sort of thing are you looking for? To sleep how many? what sort of camping?

I prefer Outwells out of the list you posted but I do love Cabanons and any kind of canvas and frame tent.

Gelert . Vango and Outwell are all good makes.

As are Sunncamp and Khyam ( I am sure others will add top makes lol)

As Keely said, deciding what type of tent you want is a good place to start.

How many does it need to accomodate

Is pack size an issue (eg tiny car + huge frame tent = not a hope lol)

What is your budget

Have you seen a tent (or tents) that have caught your eye already?

Creating a wishlist, knowing how many people the tent is for and deciding a budget is a good place to start your search

There are makes to avoid but if you mention one then one of us will let you know ok :)

Yep, agree - most well-known names should be OK, though I've been through a few and have settled on Outwell as manufacturer of choice.

Basically you get what you pay for, so avoid "bargains" on Ebay that look too good to be true.

Only other piece of advice - there are lots of threads bemoaning campsites which charge more for, or even ban, tents over 5m wide (not counting guys). This trend is likely to grow not shrink, so a tunnel/rectangular footprint might be a wise move.

Looking for a weekend tent to accommodate me and the wife and occasionally the daughter and friend so some where between 4 and 6 berth.Like the idea of vis a vis bedrooms as it would add a level of privacy.Been looking at something like the Vango Kura 600 so something in that price bracket ,size and style looks ideal

As a newbie any guidance and tips  would be appreciated

Vango is a top make and the Kura is a nice looking tent.

Here are a few ideas

Outwell Iowa L

Vango Tigris

Khyam Quebec 6

Vango Aurora

If your daughter and friend are only going occasionally and want privacy then what about a pup tent for them to sleep in ?

Then your main tent could be a little smaller and doesnt have to be vis a vis?

EG...

Vango Icarus 500

Vango Orchy 500

High gear Mojave  (Hi Gear is Gelert)

I like Vango because not only are they a top tent make but they also back up their product with a lifetime guarantee.

Yeah but proving that a fault has been a manufacturing one after you've used it a couple of times is impossible! But then again I have never had a problem with mine so doubt I'd need to contact vango about anything.

All the one mentioned above are good bands, oersonally I'm quite keen on aquiring one of the new smaller range of coleman tents. If they're anything like the big one's they'll be bomb proof.

How about a coleman modulus x4 or even a modulus x5?

Thanks for all your help and advice

took the plunge and bought  a Vango Kura 600 .Viewed at Gooutdoors and their price was £279 and wouldn't do a price match so ended up paying £165 inc delivery from www.thetentteam.co.uk

Just started a new topic requesting info on footprints and carpets

Thanks again

Wow Jim! That is quite a price difference. It is well worth shopping around, isn't it.

Glad that you got a great tent!

Well that rather goes against their pricing policy, doesn't it? Aren't they supposed to pledge a price match plus additinal 10%?

Yep, just checked again and Go Outdoors do indeed have a 'Price Guarantee' (here), so should have let you have it for £165 (price inc carriage) minus £16.50 (ten percent) = £148.50.

Why did they refuse to honour their policy?

when i rang them for the price match they contacted vango and came back to me stating that although the tents are identical thetenteams stock was manufactured in 2008 where as gooutdoors in 2009 .make what you want of that :)

Still happy with the price i paid but £20 cheaper would have bough the footprint

Don't you also need to buy one of their discount cards (or whatever they call it ) to take advantage of the price match policy?

Yep, they charge £4 and it lasts for a year. Supposedly gives you an additional ten percent off stuff in the shop (i.e. online web prices) Bit crafty really, since you obviously have to spend £40 before you save a penny.

Details are here.
