First time out for our new sun valley 6 (luckily a trial run in the local park) and one of the poles split - it was the rear red one and the metal sleeve split when I was bending it to get the end of the pole in the ring. We were really disappointed so will be contacting the shop to see if they can get a replacement pole. But reading on the forum that the tent has been discontinued so worried we might not be able to get one. Any thoughts?

Shouldn't be a problem . Hopefully the shop might give you a replacement as it split on first trial.
but you can buy a set of Outwell replacement poles (you should always carry a spares)
Check the diameter of the pole, as they vary , and any pole , doesn't even have to be outwell brand , can be cut to size with a junior hacksaw.
this is what you need outwell poles

If the ferrule split (the metal sleeve) this can be because the pole section wasn't fully into the ferrule and when you tried to bend the pole the ferrule was levered open. I'm not saying this is what definately happened but it's worth watching out for.

Thanks for the advice; spoke to the shop and they were very helpful and will replace the pole FOC. He suggested that I loosen the ring and pin set-up before inserting poles to reduce the tension in the fabric, so hopefully that will work.

When bending the pole, did you do this with the pole flat on the ground , or try to do it with the pole standing upright?
I have the sunvalley 8 and always used to bend the pole and raise it upright at the same time.
last time we pitched, we put the pins in with the poles laying flat on the ground, laid them all on top of each other and and then lifted them all up together afterwards. we found this was a whole lot easier and less strain to get the pins in ..

Yes, you should always loosen off the tensioning straps before inserting or removing the pins. It makes life a lot easier!
