Hi all,

I am looking to buy a new tent this year to replace our old one which is really not big enough anymore. I have been looking at the Outwell Ohio xl. Im a single mum with 4 kids (13,11,8 and 4) We like to go camping as often as possible but I am worried that I wouldnt be able to erect the Outwell Ohio xl on my own, although the older lads would assist.

Do any other single parents have this tent and do you think it will be too much of a problem?

Thanks

Hello and welcome.
What size was your old tent? How experienced are you and they boys at pitching, and how strong are the boys?
Its a huge tent, the length isn't so bad , its the width that would put me off.

I think the poles would be very heavy across the roof ,it being so wide and could be very difficult to manage in windy weather with out another adult.

if it were one the size of the montana say, about 4m wide , I think you would manage okay , but I think it may be a bit ambitious .
I realise you need a big tent with 4 kids , have you looked the idaho or nebraska? I think they would be more manageable than the ohio.

Just my opinion.

Debbie thanks for your advice:)

I currently have a old eurocamp windsor tent, sleeps 7, but the living area is an odd shape and quite small. I can put this up in 25 mins on my own without any help although it takes longer if its windy! The kids are just growing so fast and I like the idea of being able to put an add on at the front.

The boys are quite strong especially the eldest.

I will take a look at the other tents you suggested:)

We have an Ohio XL it will take 2 adults. The pole are steel and when threaded through the tent it is a lot of weight to lift. My wife and I struggled to put it up.

goodness me, i am a single mum and i can put this tent up with the help of my friend, yes we are to female mums, and i have even had my 7 yr old help me, it can be heavy but honestly i haven't had many problems at all, i think you would be fine, many men on camp sites look at us and say ok where are the men, we laugh and just get one with it, then they come back, we are sitting having a cuppa, this tent can be put up in 45 mins.

have fun and don't be put of.

Hi Jamie, the tent I have , the sunvalley 8 is really easy and quick to put up.

Its now discontinued , but there are still a few about, might suit you here

It has the fibreglass poles so is easier to manage , and has a front canopy included.

I find it has plenty of room for a big family , my daughter and I camped last week, and we had 4 kids with us, and six others in to play cards when it was raining. We sat out in the porch in peace and the kids had plenty of room , even with the front bedroom up. We usually all sleep in the large back bedroom, and leave the small bedroom just for the loo and as a changing room, but we had my 10yr old sons friend with us this time and so they had the small room for themselves.

thomsonsmum, jamie was asking about the ohio, not the idaho, The ohio is 5.35 meters wide, and thats why I said it might be too difficult. The idaho would be much easier, I 'm guessing you have the idahofrom your profile .

jamie, if you do go for the sunvalley the carpets are still available on ebay for about £50,and well worth having . but if you can find a shop with the tent and carpet both in stock, haggle with them for a cheaper deal.
