Hi James,
Well it's funny how things work out, I happened to mention the whole scenario to a freind of mine who happens to know a guy who spent some time with one of the north american tribes and actually builds propper tipis to order, seems he's quite local to me so we are setting up a meeting, i'll have a chat with the guy and we'll see where it goes from there.
You're right, it's all down to what your needs are at the end of the day.
