Help Please.

can anyone that has either seen on own the Royal Pescara 8 please confirm if the tent poles should have a pleat at the top of the pole to add strength to the bend in the pole?

I have now had 3 poles bend at the top when either pitching or taking the tent down. It doesn't seem to take much at all to bend the poles and once they are bent they are pretty much knackered.

I have contacted the shop where I purchased the tent and they sent me some more poles. Yet they are the same as the original ones that bend very easily.

I am now outside my twelve months warranty and only have 5 good poles left when I need 4 for the central part of the tent. If they continue to bend in there current state this could turn into a costly repair.

Any help or advice is greatly appreciated.

Thanks Mark

Hi,

I think, from memory, that yes, they should have a small pleat / crease in the pole, they sort of go square shape.

We are in the second year of using this tent, and suffered some real bad weather last year, but have no bent or broken poles.

I think you might have to try and pursue this from where you bought it, although if you are outside the warranty you may have difficulties.

If I remember, i will take some pics of the poles when we unpack this coming week, but you will have to wait another week to see pics, sorry!

Hi Louise & Family,

thanks for the reply. I have spoken again this morning to the shop where I bought my tent and they have told me that a manager would ring me back. I hope that they can resolve this problem as the poles are clearly not fit for purpose. Then the fact that the tent is out of warranty becomes irrelevant.

If it is possible to get some pics of the poles that would be great.

Any way off camping this afternoon, so that's hope no more poles bend or I will be totally knackered.

Thanks

Mark

With a slight wind on both occasions one of our pescara tent poles has bent twice(red one), Tamworth Camping can't get hold of one for me and have given me an

Indefinite time as to when I might expect one, so in the meantime I have straightened the pole out and filled the corner with "Davids" resin, so we can use the tent. I rather liked our Pescara but the red poles do put a mocker on things

Nissbird,

I like yourself got know where until I used the famous words 'Trading Standards'. As soon as I said that the tent was not fit for purpose due to the tent poles bending, I finally got someone to listen to me. Basically I have been told by Royal that the poles I have are the strengthened one's over last years model (joke joke). I asked why last years tent had the pleats in the top of the pole, as this would obviously give more strength than a pole that has just been bent. I was informed that this made no difference. If so why change it??????

Eventually they offered me my money back or another Royal tent. Unfortunately the Pescara is perfect for my needs and I cannot afford another tent of this size. I have now placed steel rods into the bend of the 4 central red poles and touch wood the poles seem OK.

Forgot to mention as I didn't take Royals offer of a new tent I instructed them to give me a Pescara carpet for my inconvenience. This arrived Friday

The carpet is great, we've got one. I intend using velcro fixing points for it, so it will stay in position better. In addition I shall be attaching extra fabric loops to the ground sheet so I can pull it tight across the ground and prevent the ground sheet ballooning when the wind gets up.

We had a problem with our poles, and the shop we bought it from gave us some new ones, but we went for a weekend and has the same problem, the poles have bend at the top and we feel its weakened them.

MWalke Did you go direct to Royal.  We bought ours about a year ago

No, Royal will only speak to people in the trade. I bought the tent from World of Camping in Jan 08, but as the tent was not fit for purpose the purchase date is irrelevant.
Dont let the shop you bought the tent from fob you off. World of Camping ignored me on a number of occasions (never returning calls) but after I mentioned trading standards and ukcampsite they suddenly took an interest in my problem. Funny that

Our dealer gave us some more poles but we used it again and the same problem happened.  I wish we hadnt bought that one now, love the size, but saw the Bordeaux one on site this weekend, and looked easier to pitch.

Our dealer are still doing Royals but no Pescara

I bent one of my poles the first time I put ours up on my own. My local camping shop (HIghbridge Caravans) normally keep a range of poles in stock. When I needed a replacement they were out of the red ones but ordered me one in which only took three days to deliver.

I will only attempt to put the tent up on my own now if there is now wind at all, but once the centre section of the tent is up (the red poles) I can carry on on my own.

Do you leave your pods in and also leave the ZIG in.  We have pitched this tent three times and bent the poles on the middle part twice.  We did wonder if it was too heavy if all left intact

We leave the pods and ZIG in ours, before we lift the centre section I go inside and push it up while DH stays outside and makes sure the legs are positoned correctly, that way it is supported in the centre.

Thanks Bibster, I think the problem is getting the poles in the right position.  I must admit the 2nd time we pitched it, and bent 2 poles was when it was hurricane winds and torrential rain!!!  Probably didnt help

hi Nissbird, we are suffering with the bent poles of the Pescara ZG8. quick question: did pouring the ''David's Resin'' into the bends help?
How much of the bends did you fill?
I was thinking about getting some plates welded on the side of the tubes. I have seen on a different make tent heavy gauge wire rod welded to the inside of the bend.

cheers, and any advice would be welcome, Derek

One of our poles bent the first time we used it, we pitched anyway didnt cause a problem. Some good ideas on here though to strengthen them. will get hubby to have a look. Just a quickie - what's David's Resin?

I know this sounds mad, but have you tried pitching the centre of the tent up last, that way it relieves the pressure on the red poles, ive had my pescara 3 years and have no bent poles etc, although ive replaced a few springs, was thinking of getting rid of it this year but its such a good tent will be keeping hold of it.
