We recently purchased an expensive tent (brand to be nameless for now).

We camped with it on the first bank holiday weekend, at a local campsite to try it out, and there were several faults with it, with some major leaks. There was also a small rip in the side extension and water was coming in. We took it back and they offered us a replacement, we took it as we liked this tent very much.

We took the replacement tent last weekend and on assembly discovered some minor omissions. We couldn't try it out before this weekend as we didn't have time. There were 2 missing guy ropes (for windows), 1 missing clip for bedroom area, and hook (not sure of the proper term) couldn't be fastened to the q thing (term?) as the machine didn't sew it up and it just snapped open the first time we assembled it. The most significant problem was with the side extension, we zipped it up before putting up the tunnel tent. Then when we used it for the first time by unzipping and zipping, it just tore open so now we have no privacy there. No water was coming in but it just looks so untidy as it is now flapping open.......

So.....I am quite upset as I paid £600 for this tent and it's not up to the standard for the money I paid. We are very careful with our possessions and were careful with this tent....

We now want a refund but don't know if it is feasible given the above problems are quite minor????

TIA.

JC

I'm very sorry to hear about your problems with what you thought ws going to be your ideal tent. Even though you say the problems are quite minor they are unacceptable in a new tent and you have a right to expect it to be perfect. I would seem that some manufacturers have been having big problems with their quality control.

I think it is up to the discretion of the retailer whether they offer you a replacement or issue a refund. But if they offer another replacement it may be worth making the point that you would really rather get a refund having taken your time deciding on your ideal tent and then having had two of that particular tent with defects. It is in the interests of the retailer to take care of their customers, and it is not their fault that a manufacturer seems to be in the habit of supplying defective tents, so hopefully you can come to some amicable arrangement between you.

Please let us know how you get on.

Thank you for your response, I am trying to compose an e-mail to the retailer and am finding it difficult as I hate confrontation. They must be fed up with me by now as I've had several problems and kept e-mailing them, first tent was faulty and the replacement tent didn't come with a footprint groundsheet as promised, now this!

Argh!

We sent back 3 Outwell Idaho XL's last year until we got one that while not entirely perfect was as close as we felt we would ever get. If it's the ideal tent for you try one final replacement but make it clear to the retailer that this is the last one you will accept and if it is faulty you would like a full refund. good luck x

Oh dear, they've refused to refund me but offered to exchange for another tent up to the value to £600.....I'm quite disappointed really as there is nothing else in their shop which comes close to our requirements. They suggested an Outwell Vermont which is similar but it doesn't appeal to us, really.

I've contacted Trading Standards and they've said I'm entitled to a refund if the goods are faulty which the tent was.

Actually I'm really upset and sad as we were so careful with our £600 and we did buy something which was meant to be of high quality and standard, although a newcomer with few reviews (but good ones). We now have this hassle, with the retailer, and also we have to find something else suitable for our next trip.

I'd get back on the phone and tell them what trading standards have said, and ask what their reason is for not giving you a refund on the faulty goods.
they are trying it on, they have a legal obligation to refund you.

Please do not let them get away with this.

If the retailer is a large chain identify who the CEO/MD is and email or write to them at their HQ Google is really useful for obtaining this information, be polite and persistent.

The problem you have is that the issue has to be resolved by the retailer as it is with them that you have the contract, however I am surprised thnat Trading Standards are not being a bit more proactive in your defence.

If you paid for the item using a credit card get in touch with the card provider as they will be able to assist and probably get you your money back.

Last year I had issues with Halfords Blacks and Argos (sound a bit like a Victor Meldrew) but in each case a quick trawl of the internet identified who was at the top and after firing off emails and letters within days I had the situation resolved in my favour.

Too offen a retailer will try and fob you off but don't forget they will either get a replacement from the manufacturer or a refund for their trouble and you will probably see the tents that you rejected being sold as shop soiled or sold as seen at the end of the season anyway. Do not feel sorry for the retailer they have your money and have not delivered on their side of the contract.

The key thing is don't get down about the situation but see it as a challenge they have your money and you want it back.

It would be useful for others on this forum to know who the retailer and manufacturer is so that we don't get caught out like you or at least be bit more wary...word of mouth is a powerful thing.

Best of luck

How about trying for 3rd time lucky with the same tent? Get them to exchange it one last time and if it's not right your money back. Remember to get a new receipt though with the new date of purchase ion it.

If the item is faulty you are entitled to your money back if that is what you desire - no arguments.

Are you willing/able to tell us what tent it is?

Maybe if we know exactly what you are looking for for £600 then we could all come up with suggestions to help you (or possibly confuse you)

Thank you, the owner has said that there has been a misunderstanding and they would refund me when I return the tent - phew!

It's a Kampa Studland, a brilliant tent but we seem to have been unlucky with quality issues. I also wasn't sure about the bedroom arrangement in this tent as only a max of 4 could sleep together.

We are now looking for a tent that is at least 420 wide, with 3 or 4 bedroom inners. I have 3 young girls and prefer to sleep in the same compartment as them. I may have a 4th in the near future if things go to plan! So far the Arkansas may fit the bill but I don't like the colour!!!!!Last year's colour would have been good if they had made this model!
