Hi,

I'm having massive difficulty choosing between the Vango Icarus 500 or Orchy 500. I can afford either but as the Icarus is around £40 cheaper, this would leave me with some money for a carpet or footprint etc.

The Icarus looks as though it's easier to pitch which could play a part in my decision as I may need to pitch on my own and it also looks like the living area is bigger in the Icarus. I definitely prefer the look of the Orchy but I'm not sure which of the 2 would be sturdier . I've seen the Icarus, carpet, footprint and canopy for £200 which is very tempting as I would only be able to get the Orchy + carpet for that price.

Given the choice, which would people go for? I'd like to view them really to make my mind up but I live bang in the middle of central london and need to purchase within the next week or so.

Any advice appreciated.

Was looking at the Icarus today, looks pretty good.  Can't recall the Orchy so can't comment.

The Icarus would be easier to put up solo, if that's a factor?

I wouldn't say it's the deciding factor as I will nearly always have help, although there's only so much you can expect from the OH. I keep swaying back and forth between the 2 and I don't really want to make a wrong decision.

just been over to winfields to have a look at the orchy, pitched alongside the icarus.

having just sold my spare evolution 400, the choice was made in seconds - orchy won hands down.

I can only coment on the Icarus, but will say im very impressed with it, easy to put up, very spacious and at a great price.  (One word of warning though Vango Carpets pluck very easily mine had 2 pulls on once it was barley out of the bag)

I was in the same position as you orchy500 or icarus 500 and found it a difficult choice. Winfields (Hull) had both on display which made it even harder to choose as both are very nice tents. I checked online reviews and users reviews/comments and both had pro's and con's so in the end i chose on price. I bought the Weekender 500 from Great Outdoors for £200. I haven't used it yet apart from erecting it in the garden and the smoke/black colour is a lot better than the ensign blue. I have a few questions about the canopy but thats for another thread.

On another note the store manager at Great Outdoors is knowledgable and answered all my stupid and technical questions with ease.

regards Joe

Yeah I think viewing both would be a huge advantage as at the moment I can only go by pictures or videos. The weekender deal looks very good but I do question how much I really need or would use the canopy. I spose it doesn't hurt to have it just incase I do ever use it, but paying the extra £40 or so for it does make me think.

Such a dilemma, I don't think I'll ever be able to decide!
