Hoping someone can give some advice on choosing our new tent?

Our requirements are

Room for up to 5 (3 adults, 2 kids),

2 large bedrooms, preferably well seperated.

200cm or more head height

Seen plenty of tents that tick all those boxes but we are looking for something with a large porch with a door seperating it off from the rest of the tent. A porch large enough to store all the cooking gear, shoes etc and be able to sit/cook in with a door to keep smells/smoke from the main tent.

Can anyone recommend any suitable models?

The nearest I have found yet is the Outwell Michigan L although the door inside the porch is half mesh and so will let smoke in and it is possibly a little larger than we need.

I saw a 2007 Outwell Sun Valley 6 which would have fit the bill but obviously this model is no longer available.

So......any recommendations? 5/6 berth, decent size porch and living area with a seperating door, budget around £300.

Thanks in advance.

The Michigan L is a vis-a-vis tent - with bedroom at each end and living in the middle. I don't think it would b e quite big enough for comfortable living for morethan a weekend camp (unless you are not bothered about having too much space). Not sure it will sleep 3 adults and 2 children - how about Michigan XL??

Have yet to use mine but it's very similar to my Khyam but with the porch bit (that I wished the Khyam had had)

Have had a SV6 and now have an SV8 (both 2008 models) and would highly recommend them as family tents - though for 5 I would go for the 8 over the 6 as the third adult can have their own bedroom at the front.
The Sunncamp ?(will go look for the name) is almost identical to the SV8 so that would be a good buy too.
Beefysmum has both and could tell you more.

Off to find the link for the SV8 and the name of the Sunncamp

SV8 but it's £399 - saying this the HH is better at 5000

http://www.worldoftents.co.uk/outwell-sun-valley-8-tent-free-kids-room-p-1338.html?currency=GBP

It's an Eden - not in stock here but if you can find one a little less ££ than the SV8 looks like it's been replaced but the Vario 600 and 600 plus (the plus is around £409)
HH on these is 3000

Thanks Keely,

That Sunncamp Eden is exactly the kind of thing we are looking for, although again, possibly a little large.

Should have made it clearer in my first post, at least 75% of the time it will just be for use by 2 adults 1 teenage daughter, this Summer an extra adult and child will be with us but they can share (1 adult 2 kids) one large bedroom as it's just a one off, if they like camping they'll be getting their own!

So for usual use it's going to be 3 (maybe 4 with one of the daughters friends but again they can share a room) so we want room for 2 double beds + some room for clothes in the bedrooms, bit of living area but not huge and a decent sized porchg with a seperating door to keep + use all the cooking gear etc in.

Having said that, with the removeable bedroom, that Sunncamp Eden looks great, can't quite tell from the pic, does it have a dividing door at the back of the porch?

Does anyone know if it is available in stock anywhere as a quick google hunt didn't turn anything up?

Anything else on the market that I should be looking at that is a similar design?

Can anyone recommend a good tent display in the Yorkshire area, to see loads of models pitched on display?

Many thanks.

Where in Yorkshire are you?
Yeomans have outdoor tent displays at some stores.
There's the one at Don Valley (Doncaster/Sheffield) - someone will correct me if wrong.
Catterick Caravans have a small indoor display.

Debbie is the one to tell you more about the Eden but as I say it may be a case of trying to find someone with stock as I fear it's a discontinued model.
Sometimes it's better to have a phone around as stores may have things that don't appear on web sites.

Beaubell has just come back from their first trip away in the Michigan L and I'm waiting for them to do their tent review

http://www.ukcampsite.co.uk/chatter/display_topic_threads.asp?ForumID=3&TopicID=186610&PagePosition=2

The Michigan would be big ehough for your family but prob not for all 5 of you THOUGH you could get a pup tent (just for sleeping in) for your teenager for when there are 5 of you going - sites don't usually charge extra for them either.

I think that's prob the option I would go for - Michigan L and a pup tent since it's mainly the 3 of you going.

or can you borrow a little one/two man tent for this trip or find a nice 2nd hand one on eBay (just bought my teenager a little Cabanon ridge tent)

The sunncamp eden is very rare, I have never seen one for sale, new or secondhand since I got mine. it does have a door that completely seals off the living area from the porch. This is my favourite of all my tents , I prefer it to the sv8 2007 that i also have as the porch is bigger and doesn't slope as steeply.

somerset camping have the outdoor revolution scenic premium 7 and 5 berths, which has a porch front sealed off from the main tent, here with more photos on the outdoor rev website here

Thanks for the replies so far guys, the Outdoor Revolution range look interesting and as they are local to me, I'm going to pay them a visit this week I think.

Spent the last hour or so looking at alternative options on here (what a great site!) and come across the Vango Tigris 600 with the optional tunnel extension. Any opinions on that as an option?

With the 3 bedrooms it will just manage with 5 of us and when it's just the 3 of us, the 3rd room can be removed or used for storage. Having seen a couple of threads on here with members struggling with the Vango extensions, would I be right in thinking that the "Tunnel Extension" available in Smoke (blueish) only is the one to fit the Tigris and that it goes on the side door (ie the one with the little canopy over it) so use of the optional bedroom is still available at the end?

Does anyone have a pic of one of these fitted as some of the stuff I've read on here is making me cautious. It would suit our purposes perfectly from what I can see as it would give a small kitchen area sealed from the rest of the tent if needs be. Any idea on the size of this extension?

Youre right about the tunnel extension or tunnel canopy(which is open ) are the ones that will fit the tigris. if you read the thread with the pic on it, valkscott is going to post pics after she uses hers this weekend .
