Well, best thing to do is to carry an entire spare pole(s). Then you can just put in the new one and carry on. Mend the other pole asap though.
Second best thing is to carry spare pole sections of the sizes required and shock cord. It's a boring job to do in the pouring rain when you're in a hurry and just want to get the tent up quickly though.
Third and really for emergencies only is to use duct tape. Lots of it. Spiral wrap down, then put on some longitudinal strips then spiral wrap again. Trouble with this is that in strong winds it's not going to behave like the rest of the pole and that can put extra stress on the other sections which may then also break.
I usually carry a spare pole of each size required and a few spare sectios and cord. They don't need much space. I have however been in a situation where I had to go home because I ran out of duct tape, the wind was so bad and the poles were breaking all over the place. Fun though!
