Ok, I want one..

But I have concerns. My husbands concerns are bigger..!

(and one of my concerns is that I'll get reassuring replies from people that work for Bell Tent or Soulpad or whatever - really I only want replies from impatial folk. Realise that I wouldn't know if you were or not, but am just asking that sellers of these tents don't reply)

Ok

I am drawn more to Soulpad, mainly because they do the tent that does not have SIG (hate those early hot mornings, so would rather like to put sides up), but it does have eyelets so that you can kind of join up with the sides.

Does that system work though?

If it doesn't, and actually, all you can really do is just tuck the flaps in, then does that work? Does it get very drafty or wet when it rains

How buggy/creepy crawly does it get without SIG. II know that's a bit 'how long is a piece of string' but feedback welcomes anyway!

Are they really easy (ish) to put up?

How long to dry a damp tent? We have no room to put it up in the garden on returning. We would either have to drape it about/over washing line, or borrow a friend's garden to dry it in (haven;t asked them yet mind!)

Can you put up segments of the sides, rather than all of them?

That's all for  now. Cheers!

I've been camping in bell tent type design tents, but never one of the big bell tents that are in fashion at the moment.

Without a SIG you get spiders and the like, but it's not horrendous. My girlfriend is terrified of spiders, but didn't insist on a tent with an SIG.

You don't get water washing into the tent, or terrible draughts. Generally the ground does a pretty good job of soaking up rain rather than it running along the surface, and the storm flaps stop the rest.

All in, they're nice comfortable things to be in.

The thing that puts me off them is the size and weight of the tent packed up - you need a big car if you intend to use the back seats and get our other gear in.

we bought a bell tent (without SIG) last year from Obelink -as a bit of a novelty-its now our favorite tent.

Its easy to put up, has stood up to some horrendous weather. We just tuck the flaps under the ground sheet and stay nice and dry .Our daughter hates bugs and its never been an issue with this tent or any others to be honest.

Drying it-we have a tiny garden and have managed to dry it when it was a bit damp by putting the pole up and pegging it out a bit/lean it on the fence(its a bit heavy for our washing line) and moving it round once in a while. But if its really wet we take it to the park and put it up-my husband takes a paper and my daughter goes on the swings-everyones happy! How long it takes depends on how windy/warm it is.

you can put up segments of the sides-as you wish, don't have to put it all up.

we love ours-i'm a convert to canvas.

thanks both, that's very helpful. We have a big enough car, i think.

Any other replies also welcome. :-)

There are other threads regarding bell tents on this forum, well worth searching out. One is recent (last night) I love my 5 mtr bell tent from soulpad, but there's not much between any of them. Bell Tent co. do an inner tent which is bug proof. Very quick and easy to pitch. Warm and not drafty, as already stated. I would love a 3 - 4 and 5 mtr version for various trips. I like mine enough to be bidding on a second hand 4 mtr at the moment. The three mtr would be great for over nighting  one or two people max. I'm not aware of any input from suppliers regarding the bell tent postings I have read. In all well worth the money, and not much trouble selling on for a good price if you find you don't like it, as long as you don't have collection only. There is no problem with postage, parcel force will take all the normal sizes.

My four berth frame tent took up twice the space when folded up.

Go for it  Bob

Canvas tent, paraffin light, petrol stove. Heaven
I'd rather be kayaking.
Spent up, not pent up, just had my new tent up.
