Following advice on another thread I have managed to shortlist these three as contenders for our first tent.There is 2 adults and 3 boys (7, 3.6, 2) to accomodate.

The Hi-Gear Zenobia we saw at Go Outdoors and was we thought perfectly fine and seemed quite big enough for our needs. The bedroom space seemed big enough for 3 airbeds on one side and a double on the other. The living space seemed as if it would be good enough if it rained and we were stuck inside at any point.HH is 3000. The price at £179.99 seemed good as well as we were looking at about £200.

The Coleman Matrix 6 has been recommended on another thread and looking at the specs the bedrooms seem marginally bigger than the Zenobia but the living space is double the size of the Zenobia.HH is 6000. But the weight and size folded is a lot more obviously and we do have to think of that as well. The price is £175. We obviously haven't seen this one up to compare.

While I furtling around the boards I came across the Gelert Horizon 8. Which looked absolutly brilliant. Weight in between the other 2 but packed in 2 bags to help with that, so should make for easier transporting. The inside bedroom combinations seem really flexible, we would have storage space. Living area huge. HH 3000. Can add a porch on as well at a later date. Not been able to find one at under £200 yet but I am still looking.

Given that sort of choice, which one would you go for or is there another one I should consider? (say no as the DH is going to shoot me, he thought we had decided on the Zenobia )

I always say for your main tent you should go as big as you dare . So my vote is with the Matrix . As you say you could go for the Horizon and add an extension ,but you would also be looking at a total spend of around £300. But if the Horizon is considered, for the same kind of money you could consider the Khyam Ontario 8 , which is another tunnel ,a fraction larger , and very popular here.

Just brought the matrix 6 and saw it up well got the ex display one and it is fab. There are 6 of us including 3 boys 14 12 9 and girl 2 and for a trial of camping I feel this is fine . Yor boys are younger so ample space and the living area is huge! Haven't tried it out so to speak yet though.

Cheers for that Number Six. After much searching I can't seem to get the Horizon below £240, so that one is out of the mix. At the moment I am quite tempted by the Matrix but I really need to see it up so will give a couple of shops a ring and see if they have one. Go Outdoors didn't, will see if BCH camping have one.

I cant speak for the other tents but ....

We just took our Zenobia 6 back after one of the side door zips gave before pitching !

We where on hols so made the best of it, gaff taped the zip/door shut ...woke with pools of water in various places, interestingly enough though they were not from the gaff taped door but from other areas ! .

We slept in the end which raises up to make the porch with the included steel poles ....and that leaked water in and soaked our feet too.

Leaks from above each side door [ from where the bit you attach the toggles too]
I purchased a very big tarp from B&Q for £12 [ after reading recommend on this site]
I used this to cover the entire tent for the remainder of our holidays to provide at least some protection from the rain ...

Maybe we just had bad luck though it is my opinion these are Gelert seconds rebranded as high gear ...


I wouldn't buy this tent if I was you .

Hi Tigerfeet,

We recently purchased the Zenobia 6 from Go a few weeks ago and used it for the first time recently. The tent is superb, it's got loads of room, although we did only have 1 bedroom up, however even with both pods you still have a fairly large living area and is really easy to erect (I erected it myself in 30 mins). It rained heavily on the Saturday night however the tent remained totally dry. Like you I had narrowed it down to 2 tents, the Zenobia & Matrix 6. My first choice was probably The Matrix, but I couldn't find anywhere where I could go and see it in the flesh and I was put off slightly with the weight of the tent as I only have a Ford focus which was already weighted down with other camping accessories.

All in all I'm very happy with the Zenobia.

I have just bought the Zinobia tent from Go Outdoors at the great price of £149 , i have not tried it out yet but it gets some great reviews on here.......i think it's a great tent for the money and it has loads of room inside
