I'm looking for a 4/6 berth tent that is either dark in colour so keeps the light down in the sleeping compartments, or do any makes have blackout sleeping inners? You can probably guess why - we gave up with tents after too many 5am wakings from the kids but I would still like a change from the caravan occasionally , so any advice greatfully recieved!

I think black out sleeping inners is a great idea, as I am no good at early mornings... I've even thought about sleeping with a bag over my head ( the husband would be pleased!)

Funnily enough, I'm sure I've seen Blacks advertise their own brand with - yes, blackout inners. Might be wrong. Always possible.
TBH we rather enjoy time shifting the day - up with the birds at dawn and early to bed. But maybe that's an age thing
Definitely an age thing
I managed to go back to sleep after being woken up by the dawn chorus on the second morning, and rolled out of bed around 07:00h when the inside of the tent starts to warm up due to the sun.
I read somewhere about pitching the tent so that the bedroom section faces west to avoid the early morning sun, perhaps I should try this next time in Jul 09, now that I have found my compass!

The polycotton tents arent as bright in the morning as the synthetic tents. Our Kids seem to wake up at the usual times since getting the NL rather than when using our last synthetic tent and we all woke up with the birds (which didnt really bother us to be honest)

I wonder if anyone has tried dyeing an inner? It would depend on the fibre it was made of, of course. Cotton takes dye really well, polyester needs specialist techniques. But a polycotton inner would take dye to a certain extent and if you used cold water dye like Dylon and a disposable paddling pool as a dip bath, it might work.

not sure how much the tent colour affects the light tbh, as we have a black tunnel tent-ok on the roof it's dark grey and it's pretty light in the mornings.
what a great idea! Its not just the getting up early with the kids, it getting them to sleep and to sleep ourselves when its so blinking light in the evening at this time of year! its OK for the odd night that they go to bed late and get up early but they get cranky after doing this for a while! shame the blacks tents dont look big enough for families
This is a serious issue with placky tents and sun.....
a) We have a Polly Cotton tarp over most of the tent. In Spain recently on erection it sent the temperature down from 45C to a very modest 35C (in 30C ambient). Plus it blocks out quite a bit of light. Mind you we have a gap of a couple of inches at the top of the dome to let the airflow through, so won't work for tunnels.
b) On driving back from our south Devon campsite yesterday Lady B remarked...."Have you noticed how all ice cream vans when parked on residential driveways have that army camouflage netting over them?" Nope! I' haven't....Ice Cream vans on driveways for goodness sake!
BUT Army camouflage might be useful as shade on a tent.....
.....trouble is then finding your tent

We bought the outwell kids room for our tent to help with this problem - it is definately darker in there, and the kids love going to bed in it. My 11 year old daughter said "what about me?" so I'm getting her an eye mask like you have on planes!

We've managed 1, 2 and 3. Now we just need to find some friends!
All together now..."ahhhhhhhh"

groan!
I might consider that for us actually. Hubby is a big baby when it comes to "it's too noisy, it's too bright..blah blah blah" (he now has an eye mask AND ear plugs so guess who has to 'mind' the kids when they get up at stupid o'clock with the dawn LOL
Maybe we'd all be better with some tarp or something. The frame of the Montana would more than handle it. Just to sure how much difference it'd actually make as the doorways into the tent will still be letting in a whole load of light anyway.
Might just guage how the boys sleep in the kids room first.
