we have just sold our monty 6 and will invest very soon in a new tent but the monty did leak even with a 5000mm. seen lots of tents with 3000mm and just cant get myself to try them. whats the best hydro head without spending a loads

Tents do not usually leak through the fabric, they tend to leak through the seams where they have been stitched.

Anything over 2000 mm hydrostatic head is generally adequate for the fabric, unless you have a large flat area of roof where water can collect.

It is more important to check that the seams are taped and sealed properly.

If it leaked with a 5000HH then the tent had a fault. recommended HH for the Uk is 1500 minimum.

Sorry to hear about your leaking Monty 6 but have to agree with Rochford 6 saying it must have been faultly or a hole has been created by some unknown person. The OH and i have a Montana 6 and touch wood have never had a problem with it. We have camped in it in 2 storms and during snow as we camp all year. Hope who ever bought it will find the leak and be able to patch it.

Like others have said it is the seams that generally cause the problem. We have a Vango Diablo (3000HH) that has seen some appalling weather (torrential rain for days, strong winds, lying snow for days) and we haven't had a drop!

Its not the HH that is important ( says he with a tent with 6000HH ) , it is quality of build and pitching that are key here.

thanks everyone for your comments. it leaked in the middle and also above the pods. i got a wet head after 3 days of non stop rain.lol

oh welll must concerntrate on new tent. looking at outwell again but at the maryland xl and the vermont xl also been looking at the ohio xl. anyone got any of these? also looking on internet at vango nile 800 and amazon 800

someone help or i will never buy one in time for the camping trip

There were a lot of problems with older Montys. We got our one (2007) replaced after it was sent back to Outwell for inspection by the shop we bought it from. Our new one has needed some seam sealer as well, particularly in the corners.

There seemed to be a problem with prolonged rain. The threads that fasten the bedroom compartments to the wall seemed to act like a wick and draw water in, but only after it had been raining solidly for hours. There was also a problem above the windows, where water again appeared to be being drawn in after a lengthy spell of rain.
