we are looking at 2 tents and hopefully can decide which one very soon as driving me mad.
both outwells. maryland xl and vermont xl
we had a monty 6 and wanted to go a bit bigger. we like the vermont as very similar to our well loved monty but i also love the maryland
how does everyone feel with their kids sleeping the other side of the tent. we are so used to being next door and just leaning over to sort them out in the night that having to get up and go accross the tent seems strange and will be cold.lol
my boys are 11,8 and 5

I had originally wanted sleeping compartments altogether at the back but decided to go with the Evolva for space which meant the kids were at the side of us and has not been a worry at all to be honest with you. Kids are fine, we are fine and if the little one was to wake up it only takes us an extra second to get to them!
Given that your boys are 11, 8 and 5 they'll be wanting a bit of privacy soon, rather than staying next to mum and dad right through their teens! You have to think over the next five years or the lifespan of the tent. After all, do they really need that much attention...if any...at night now?
Or you could go for the cheap option, keep the Monty and buy the two older ones a pup tent. They'll be wanting one soon anyway.
Ours love the SV8 the 11 yr old sleeps in the next bit to us but as far over the other side as she can get and the 12 yr old loves the fact that she has her own 'room'
Great for us (and anyone near us) too as they now do not stay awake arguing half the night.
Other tents are vis-a-vis style and there is no problem with them being across from us.
Oldest was most upset that we didn't take her 'new' pup tent with us last weekend out - "what's the point in buying it for me if I can't take it and use it"

I agree at that age they shouldn't really need much if any sorting out in the middle of the night. our 3 are similar aged (10, 8 and 5) and this season has been the first year that i can trust all 3 to sleep without wriggling out of their bags and for the first time they have all been sleeping later in the mornings rather than up with the sun, and of course they can all be trusted to get themselves up for a wee on the luggable loo and then put themselves back to bed. If you opted for the vermont xl there is the worry that within a year you would be regretting sleeping next to 3 boys either because they disturb you or even you disturbing them.
Get the maryland.

my middle one had a habbit of waking in the night and talking rubbish and sometimes needs settling. he doesnt do this at home only when camping. as for the 5 yr old he does sleep well but if he needs a wee will not get out quick enough without help he tends to hold it till its to late.little monster.
Our boys have never slept right next to us - they are now 15, 7 and 3 but we started camping when the eldest was 10 and middle son was 3. Our first tent was the Sunncamp APS 3006+ and the boys had a pod each and we had the third one. We now have the Khyam Ontario 8 - they sleep at one end and we sleep at the other.
Eldest doesn't often sleep in the main tent with us - he prefers his own tent.
Giving them a bit of independence at night by not being right next to mum and dad makes them feel more grown up.

we have the luxury end , with the bedroom seperater open, its makes for a huge bedroom, and this is big enough for our double airbed and baby in his junior kampabed. the other three sleep the other end, with teenage boy in 2 berth side and two girls in 3 berth, if and when the teenage daughter comes along - she gets a pup tent outside lol!!! means that any nightime activity that you want to enjoy, is not too close to those that count lol!!!
