Hi all

Great site, love the review page, anyway I am a total newbie when it comes to camping. Used to go with my folks but that was about 25 years ago so this is where I am at.
We are a family of four one 4years one 7years children

I really like the look of the ROYAL PESCARA 8 as it has all that we want but the cheapest I can find it is £399, now for me that's a lot of money but I am willing to pay it if the tent is worth it.

I can get almost the same tent but without the sun canopy and a slightly smaller porch by going for the WYNNSTER MERCURY 9 but have heard rumours that WYNNSTER tents are not such good quality is this true ?
I can get this tent for £300 including the Footprint ground sheet !

My basic but long-winded question is:-
Is the ROYAL PESCARA8 a good quality tent that will serve me for many years or should we go for the cheaper WYNNSTER tent?

Also the ROYAL tent is almost 60KG but the WYNNSTER is less than 40 that's a big weight difference.

Thanks for any advice you can give us

Thanks

Andy&Cheryl

Can't help with either of the tents you mention but just wanted to welcome you to the Mad House!!! Both Royal and Wynnster are well known and well respected brands.

If you're looking for an 8 berth tent, have a look at the Khyam Ontario 8 which is a fab tent!!!!!!
* Very easy to put up
* Fits on a standard pitch as it measures 7.5m x 3.7m (tents over 5m wide can experience problems of fitting on a pitch at many sites)
* Standing height (225cm)
* SIG (sewn in groundsheet) helps keep draughts and bugs out
* Groundsheet lies flat at the entrances so no trip hazard
* Large bedrooms - tent can comfortably accommodate 8 x 75cm wide airbeds
* Acres of living space - over 3mx 3m with all the bedroom pods in place
* Doors can be canopied open to provide shelter
* Plenty of ventilation points
* Cable entry point for EHU (electric hook up)
* Hanging hook in centre for light plus cable tidy ties
* Weighs less than 30kg

You can also buy carpet and sunporch to turn it into a real home from home!!

We bought ours in 2007 and paid £189 and got the footprint groundsheet thrown in fro free.
Prices have obviously increased slightly but well under the £300 you've mentioned for the other tents you've looked at. You really get a lot of tent for your money and there are lots of other very happy Ontario 8 owners on here too!!

Good luck with your hunt. Just remember that we all have our favourite tent so take your time and get the tent which works best for YOU.

Hello and welcome to the forum.

I am not familiar with either tent. But I notice that the Royal has a SIG (sewn-in-groundsheet) for the living area whereas the Wynnster does not. If you are camping in midge-infested areas and the little blighters like the taste of your blood then you may prefer the Royal.

If you are keen to spend less then there are some bargains to be had at Go Outdoors with the Hi Gear brand (basically re-badged Gelert which is on a par quality-wise with the ones you have mentioned). Their design is more akin to the Ontario mentioned by Helen. There is the Zenobia 6 at £150 (sold out online but available in their stores) and the Kalahari 8 at £200. The quality of both is good.
However, if you want to go into a completely different level of quality at little extra mony then consider the Wild Country Halo 73 at £250. This is an end-of-line bargain and suplies will soon be gone. Wild Country are VERY good quality tents and well designed. Further more, not many other campers will have them so you will get admiring looks.
