Hi everyone

I posted on here a loooooooong time ago when we were looking to upgrade our 2 person tent to a more family sized tent and got lots of helpful advice as to what I should be looking for.  Well, I have narrowed my search down to;

Vango Kura 800 or the Outwell Montana 6

I am favouring the Outwell, but would be interested in your opinion specifically on whether either tent could be put up by my hubby mainly alone apart from when absolutely necessary, while I supervise our 3 kids.  In an ideal world the kids would sit happily by our side colouring in or reading a book but in reality they'll be all over the place 'helping'.

The benefit of the Vango is that as the kids get older they may want to bring a friend with them, and the Vango has room for others, whereas the Outwell probably does not.

Any thoughts?  Thanks for reading.

Im pretty sure that the Vango is now obsolete

I would go Outwell everytime - as their products are better by and large - and also they seem to have a longer "shelf life" - so if you decide in a year or so that you want to up grade - you will be selling a current model - or at least one people can identify with - Outwell seem to keep the names - just upgrade the year - where as Vango just seem to move on to something totally different.

Just my thoughts - though personally - would look at a pollycotton

I would not hesitate to recommend the Montana also, sure your husband would have no prob putting it up, those videos are golden.
I have a Montana and love it to bits BUT one thing to bear in mind is sleeping space: while I'm sure I am way off the scale tent manufacturers use to do their measurements our boys are only 7 and 3 at the moment and the sleeping compartment is still pretty full with a double airbed and two singles.
Depending on how cosy you want to be you might want to check out something that sleeps 8. But the Montana is still a fab tent in all other respects. Just my £0.02

Thanks everyone, now we've seen a great deal on the Vango Zambezi 700 DLX so might plump for that, given it has more flexibility with sleeping space and it that bit more taller than the Outwell for my DH who is over 6ft. With so much choice it's really hard to choose.  I think we better stop looking or we'll never pick one!  You can still buy the Vango Kura 800 but if it get discontinued does that mean it's harder to buy accessories?

If you where asking the question last season then Outwell would have been the 1st choice. This season the quality and customer service is about the same from both companies it seems. Getting spare parts is down to choosing a good retailer as its them that you will be dealing with to obtain what you need. Vango perhaps used to be the better here as they did on occasion supply direct to customers but recently that seems to have faded away, Outwell is dealer only as you wont get a reply from Outwell themselves.

At the end of the day all tents will change or be dropped from the current line so it doesn't really matter to that extent what tent you choose. The advantage of the Montana is that there are considerably more out there so ebay or the likes will have an ongoing supply of parts if ever needed.

If it was me I would go for the Montana and then if in the future the children have friends to stay you could always pitch a pup tent or two.

It's so hard!  I've seen a few Montanas on ebay but they go for a price which isn't too off what you can buy them new for.  I prefer the look of the Outwell, as opposed to the vango brand, now we've seen the Idaho XL so depending on price and availability we'll definitely sort one out in the next couple of days.  It comes down to what you can get at what price as we really aren't 100% fixed on one particular one - keeping our options open, and DH loves a bargain.  I love this site! Thanks.

Dont be fooled by the advertising and the service it's all flannel - Outwell are definitely ure quality AND the fussy bits are genius (no I dont work for them!!)

After years of Outwelling we decided for a change and we bought and Vango Diablo - pitched and there was a huge tear in the skin on the side of the main tent, hence we called the shop that we bought it from and they were fab and brought us a new Vango Diablo to the site and even helped us erect it!

After one night in May, that was windy and rain (not gales) not only did it leak but 2 tears appeared in the same places opposite sides as the last tent.

We got a full refund and bought a 2 year old Outwell Hartford Large from a classified ad.including a front canopy (just right for me, hubbie and 5 year old). We put this up  last August and the quality is far better - it persistently rained 5 out of 7 days yet the tent was dry inside. One night the wind was so bad that I consumed a lot of alcohol convinced that I wouldnt sleep and the tent would blow away - the next morning the tent was fine - lets just say my hubbie was not very sympathetic with my hangover!

Outwell's rule! - I bought ours from 'Preloved' classified who have a few Outwell's on there, not for long though!

Good Luck!

I think everyone has differing opinions based on their past tents.  We had an outwell nebrasca and it leaked like a sieve every time we used it.  Went to look for a new tent in May (in heavy rain) all the outwell tents were wet inside so we went for a vango.

When we put it up it felt thinner than the outwell and was a lot lighter so we were a bit worried.

Camped last week and had 5 days of rain and wind but it did not leak a drop, so I would go with the vango every time.

I've got the Vango Kura 600, it wastes a lot of space with the stupid really sloping doorways and if you don't have a canopy on in the rain you can't have the door open as it rains in about 3 foot!  I've had real problems with breaking fibreglass poles, I must have replaced about half of them during last summer and this summer, don't know if it's to do with the tent design or just rubbish poles but I wouldn't bother with another.  It's back to my favourite make for the next tent a Wynnster.

If you buy a new tent, whatever model you decide on, make sure you check the terms and conditions of sale, especially with internet deals.  I bought a new tent which leaks from Highbridge caravans. When I reported problems, I was told to reseal it myself and not a lot could be done about the pooling water collecting on the roof.

If I had bought the tent through Millets, they would have given me either a replacement or refund.
