Well I have when I was a kid, but my parents did all the work.
We want to go camping. There's me, my girlfriend and 3 (possibly 4 if we can persuade the eldest) children. Their ages are 3, 4, 6 (and 9).
We'd like a tent with 3 separate sleeping areas and plenty of headroom. Cost is an issue, but all ideas welcomed, please. I've seen some on Ebay but after googling the name, they only appear on Ebay and one in Argos and Yeomans for around £150
Please advise me, someone

I am a bit biased as i have one but a Vango Diablo 900XP/DlX has three sleeping pods and ample room for 6 people. Head height in the sleep pods is in excess of 6'.

If you want something of a similar size for less money second hand (Ebay) a Royal Sassari/Biarritz 9 is a good size and value for money.

Vango Colarado 800 is also a good tent but you cant stand up in the sleep pods.

Have a look through the tent reviews on this site and get an idea of the pros and cons for a good selection of tents.

If you have a bit more than £150 Outwell have a good range of larger tents.

Do a google search (or on Ebay) for tents that sleep 8+ people, there may only be six of you but go for something larger than your needs as the extra space is a god send. There are only 4 of us but the Diablo is great, a pod each for our two teenagers and one for me and wifey.

I can highly recommend the Khyam Ontario 8.
A bit over budget but worth it as it is a fantastic bit of kit and will serve you well.

* very easy to put up
* SIG (sewn in ground sheet-great for keeping bugs out and wayward kids in!)
* standing height (225cm)
* large bedrooms that can accommodate 8 x 75cm wide airbeds
* acres of living space (over 3m x 3m)
* fits on a standard pitch (tent measures 7.5m x 3.7m)
* groundsheet goes flat at the doors so no trip hazard
* doors can be canopied out to form sun porch
* large windows with vents

Once a tent is over 5m wide, you may begin to experience problems of getting a pitch especially if you want electric hook up.
Some sites will refuse to accept you at all and others may charge you for 2 pitches .
There are sites that accept larger tents but they appear to be in the minority so may limit your choice.
This is something to consider when tent hunting.

If you can, go and see as many tents as you can to give you an idea of size and layout. Remeber that all tents seem huge with nothing in them!
Spend the most that you can afford on a good quality, well known brand. Better to get a good quality second hand tent than a cheap, poor quality new one.

Getting advice and reading reviews is good but at the end of the day make sure you buy a tent that's right for YOU and is going to work for your family.

In my humble opinion the Diablo is a pain in the proverbial to put up, especially if you have little or no experience. For usable space it's hard to beat the tunnels which have a rectangular footprint and are generally easy to put up too. I have had tunnels and domes and these would be my preference. Mind you 3 bedrooms in a tunnel can be difficult to find without spending a fortune.

Avoid ebay tents until you know what you are looking, unless it is one of the better known manufactures, ie khyam,cabanon,outwell,coleman vango. I would look at some of the Khyam ridgidome pod tents?

Agree 100%. I've just replaced a couple of pole sections on ours. Piece of Cake. Just such an easy and forgiving tent.

Hi, the best thing to do is go down to a tent showroom.  Tents look fab on screen but there is nothing like walking into one to get a feel for room sizes, door locations and what works for you.  It also helps you see how easy they are to put up because believe me, some aren't.  Some tents look great but if its hard to put up you'll curse yourself when its raining (as it often is!!)  It may seem a bit of a faff but it will be a morning well spent (and the kids love running amok in and out of them)!!

Oh yes and then you can go on-line (or even e-bay if you're brave enough) and see if you can find the exact same one cheaper.  We have an Outwell Sunvalley 8 which is fab for us but we only decided on it after we saw it up. Good luck.
