Hello folks.

I'm sure like many others, we started off with a tent & then progressed to a caravan.

We had a caravan for a few years & was lucky enough to get some long trips away with it. This year, we fell out of love & decided to sell. I cant explain why, but it all felt like hassle to us, going away for a couple of nights just didnt seem worth the agro & unless it was for at least a week we wouldnt bother. Fuel cost also played a small part if i'm honest.

After a few months of not owning either, we have decided that in fact we may of preferred the simplicity of a tent & perhaps we got bogged down with the comforts of a caravan & maybe even lost perspective of why we originally enjoyed these types of holiday.

So today we are proud owners of a tent again ... well actually a very large fishing bivvy (good excuse eh ), being a fisherman & a previous "tenter" i was aware that my fishing bivvies were generally of much higher quality than the previous conventional tents (Kyham & Coleman) i had owned & yet comparable on price.
Granted, only really any good for a couple of adults (possibly small child aswell), but it measures approx 3mtr x 3mtr (bigger than some family tents), is fully twin skinned, so there wont be any condensation anywhere, both skins are 10,000mm HH graded waterproof material so excellent quality material too. All on an aluminium 20mm frame so absolutely rigid when erected, along with no pole thrading makes it very easy to put & down.

We have just booked a couple nights this week up at Sandringham for the show .... really looking forward to it.

Anyone else gone from tent to caravan to find they may have preffered being under canvas ??? ... or are we mad !!!

& curious to know if anyone else uses a fishing bivvy or something other than the conventioanl style tents ??

Must admit when away recently I watched a couple of caravans arrive around the same time as tenters.  On most occasions the tenters were happily sitting with tea long before the vanner had finished attending to the last detail.

Your not alone. We sold are caravan 2weeks ago and gone back to tenting. Really looking forward to it and less expense through the year  with insurance and storage plus the extra fuel we were paying.

Really on the verge of getting a tin box and threads like these help no end in keeping us away from the dark side, Got a 4 year old trakker bivvy that stinks to high heaven and seen some dire weather but never lets me down so I know what you mean about quality. Welcome back to the real world of camping.

im def with you g4fne we too went from tent to van(after lots of wet weekends away) then last year back to tent, which our caravanning friends really dont understand and prob think it comes down to Oh not wanting to spend money on  another van but its not!!

We love the freedom of not towing, you can be impulsive and go off route theres no longer the need to go direct to the site to pitch the van first if somewhere takes our fancy. Same coming home.

In the van a tv was a must have and yes i found myself switching it on in an evening, but not any more.

Back to the tent with no ehu, wardrobes or cupboards and where did all those inflatable sofas come from ha ha, so we have 2kids and our springer sat in the back and all the camping stuff goes in the boot, if it doesnt fit it doesnt go, no more towing for us not even a roofbox, all in a passat with the a bike rack attached to the redundant towbar.

Must admit i do miss the van in really bad weather and havin built in cupboards to keep things tidy but thats it.

I feel free once again to feel  the wet grass in the mornin whilst drinkin that first cup of tea in the fresh air as Oh cooks the bacon(oh that smell) and imho more choice of fab sites where the views make life worth living..
