A footprint it an additional groundsheet that is put under your tent to protect the tents own groundsheet. Its a good idea to have a footprint groundsheet if your tent has a SIG (sewn in groundsheet).

Hi,

The word 'footprint' refers to the total floor area of your tent.

And a lot of campers buy a footprint groundsheet, which is just slightly smaller than your tent and goes down on to the grass before you pitch your tent. You then put your tent on top of it.It helps to protect your tents SIG(sewn in groundsheet) if its got one,and also keeps dirt and mud off the bottom of your SIG.
Hope this helps.

I see Chris beat me to it.lol

the best thing about a footprint is it keeps the base of your tent clean and dry,if you have a sig.also helps protect your sig from possible damagefrom rocks under it.we never got condensation under ours.it is not breathable though

Just make sure your footprint doesn't stick out past your tent or you will get water running in and pooling under your SIG.

The footprint also gives you a clean (hopefully dry too !) surface on which to unpack/repack everything, as well as giving you a "template" layout best suited for your pitch.
