hello all

I have just joined the forum.
I have recently just started going camping again after a break of about 12years. I used to camping quite a lot when I was younger, mainly through the scouts, and have fond memories of seemingly indestructable, though heavy canvas tents.

Anyway, I bought a cheap aldi tent and went off for a week. Although it was a thoroughly enjoyable week, it was let down by the weather.

Sooo after watching everyone elses tents get blown about and bent (a landrover defender makes an excellent windbreak!!!!) and being kept awake by the VERY loud sound of rain on polyester, I decided I wanted a proper strong tent, preferably a canvas one.

I don.t really like the chalet style frame tents, and am put off by dome and tunnel styles of tent by the amount that they seem to flex and bend when even only a relatively gentle breeze blows.

I have done a bit of looking around and now have to make a decision. I think the tent I would like most is the outwell bear lake 4, but I can't really afford it, so its a bit of a non-starter.

I can afford 3-400 quid and am torn between:
Relum patrol tent(!!!)
Relum giant Pearl
Relum Task force 4/5 (and the extension flysheet)
Relum alaska
Blacks Icelandic 1
vango Force 10 mk5.
Or some sort of bell tent, like at www.belltents.co.uk

I was wondering if any of you more seasoned campers have any experience with any of the above tents, and what you thought about them.

Many Thanks

Alex

Hi Alex,

This is a bit pricey but is within your budget and is very good in the wind.....I have one and it has withstood some very high winds on an exposed site....also very warm with liner.

It's a very heavyweight polycotton (feels like canvas to me!)) and looks as if this one comes with those big wooden pegs which I don't like...mine came with steel Landrover pegs which are far better and which you can get from army surplus stores.

There's not that many around but you may get one cheaper...only drawback is very dark inside when zipped up and may not be big enough for you...
