we bought the gelert horizon porch this year to go with our Vango Albany 800 tent (very similar to the horizon 8). We'd had a quick check of the porch in the garden, but as you can't erect it properly without a tent to attach it to & our Albany just about fills the lawn (no room for guys, never mind a porch ) then the first time we pitched it was "for real"
It's a simple design to erect, the fiddly bit is keeping it all steady while you walk the straps that go over the top round each end of the tent in order to peg them, once that's done you're just about home &dry.
DH has a theory he wants to try next time we are out, by just erecting the "hoop" nearest the tent, then getting the straps in position, then erecting the front hoop. He reckons that will be easier, but as yet an unproved hypothesis
We thought the porch was a fab addition BTW, wouldn't be without it now.
our garden is big enough but unfortunately we had it re turfed about 3 weeks ago and don't want to mess on it for another month or so. So like you it will be on site first time for us too.
we are driving to france in 2 weeks so we will know how easy it is then, many thanks for the quick response
We have the Horizon 8 and porch and it is fairly easy to erect. We spread out the porch material in front of the tent, get the guy ropes that have to be pegged out at the back and chuck them to someone waiting at the back of the tent to catch (this can take a few times if its windy)then peg down the ropes. We then put all the poles in and peg out adjusting the back ropes for a good fit.
We think the porch is a brilliant addition too and would definitely not leave home without it - btw best to put a groundsheet over the straps going along the ground, our two kept tripping over them!
Have a good one - hope the porch serves as a "sun canopy" and not a "rain canopy"

When we're chucking guylines over a tent we tie them onto something soft but bulky, then the lines travel further and are easier to catch. Fortunately one of our son's teddy bears is always a willing volunteer!
(Yeah, I know I look daft as a brush on campsite doing things like this. And????)
There are two thickish straps attached to either side of the porch material which in turn attaches to the bottom of the poles - stops you from erecting the porch beyond the maximum width - and these run along the ground so can become a tripping hazard.
