I have tried to get rid of this with hydrogen peroxide, bleach solution, flash hehe! Nothing works to get rid of the marks, it's not my tent, ooops.

1. What works.
2. Does the hydrogen peroxide do any damage, cause i didn't clean it off before packing the tent away?

I am stressed

You may find that the hydrogen peroxide has taken the colour out of the tent. - What sort is it canvas/polycotton or polyester - I have got rid of mildew on light coloured tents with Dettol Mould and Mildew remover - well rinsed and then waterproofed with fabsil but have no experience of polyester.

Plain lemon juice and salt mixed with water wash the area and leave in the sun, if we get any!! it worked for us on a poly tent a while back really well.

ooooh i def like the going to the pub idea, i hope the neighbours do when they next open the tent! We might have to move.

It is a vango diablo, what ever fabric that is. I'd like to think that we have at least killed the little devils with all the things we have already used if not removed the stains.

We left the hydrogen peroxide on for 3+ hours so if it was going to remove the colour do you think it would have done so by then? It is a pale tent!

We will see and won't keep packed wet next time.

Moral of the story, don't borrow stuff.

I think you will probably have damaged the fabric if you didn't rinse off the hydrogen peroxide. Anyway, you've definately damaged the tent by letting it get mildew in the first place, surely?

When I borrow/lend something it's always on the basis of if it gets damaged it gets properly mended or replaced. I don't think you can reasonably expect your friends to be at all happy at what you've done to their tent and while they're going to be annoyed if you tell them, they're going to be utterly furious if they go on their next camping trip and find their tent is unusable due to holes rotted through the fabric or mould spores all over it.

I would tell them and offer to pay for a replacement, quite frankly. It's the only fair thing to do if you want to keep them as friends. Vango Diablo 600 or 900?

you could say whats a tent between friends after all it's only a tent but I agree with Val.It's the principle. I would have to buy them a new one. It's not just how my friends would feel it's how i would feel, I just couldn't do it!! and if I did lend my tent to anyone i would be fumming if they couldn't be bothered to dry it out for me once they got home. You can only hope your friends are more forgiven lol!!!

They are but i know i would be a bit cheesed off also. It was our first venture camping and hadn't realised about the mildew. By the way i contacted vango and this is there reply for anyone who is at a loss like me:-

Our product tema have advised that this may not have helped with the problem.

We do not recommend that you wash any tent in a washing machine as this will ruin both the machine and the material.

The best way to clean the flysheet fabric of the tent is by using warm water and a natural soap/ mild detergent .

i have found that the best way to clean tents is if you have space pitch the inner making sure it is secure, and cleaning the affected area with a sponge and leaving to dry. for the flysheet spread the flysheet out flat on the ground and clean the affected area as above. .

We recommend a product called storm fabric cleaner which will clean the fabric, However a mild detergent will also be suitable.

After cleaning the flysheet you will need to re-proof it. to do this we recommend Storm Waterproofing (an effective proofer with an added UV inhibitor, which offers added protection against degradation caused by harmful UV rays) that can be purchased from most Outdoor Shops. You can re-proof your flysheet using Storm, or any other proofer, which can be sprayed on to the outside of the flysheet and then left to dry.

For mould it is best to use Milton's sterilizing fluid that is well diluted, and sponge down the affected area.
This may not remove the mould, but it will stop it from spreading, and smelling.

You seem to be quite blase about this.   I think whatever the outcome of your cleaning escapades you owe your friends a new tent. Its not like they loaned you an Argos special - Vango tents are decent tents!

You could keep this one and hope with a spray of fabsil it will be waterproof for you?

Christine
