We bought our Outwell Vermont XL tent in 2008 so we've only had it for 2 years & we bought the side canopy for it this year.
The straps of the side canopy have (due to the wind) made numerous spilts in the top of our tent, the canopy itself has split in numerous areas too.
The tent itself (apart from the lacerations from the canopy)has ripped along the bottom from being baked in the sun and you & I both know that we've hardly had the best weather these last 2 summers!!
So as you can imagine we are gutted that we are having to throw our tent away.
What tent would you buy next if it were you?

I seem to remember you posting pictures of it in your garden with proper furniture inside it.Has it been left up for long periods of time for the kids to play in?

i'd look at what size budget you have to spend on a tent. We had problems with 2 new vango diablo 600 xp's last season and it totally put me off buying another tent as big as that, with the same type of fabric. So, we ended up upping our budget damatically and buying a polycotton outwell wolf lake 7! Best buy we've ever made. Yes, it did cost a lot of money and yes, we did end up having to buy a trailer to put everything in, but it has ben by far the best tent we've ever owned in the past 13ys of camping!!
Good luck with your search x

Lisa, as a fellow Vermont user I am as you'd imagine slightly worried by this!
We had to take 1 back due to leaks but so far apart from a few issues with a couple of tension straps, this one is fine and hasn't had any issues.
Where you say "[the tent]has ripped along the bottom from being baked in the sun", do you mean the fabric has gone brittle and paper like? Could you have got any oil on it (which could also do that I think)?
we have two tents one a vango venture 500 we we use for short breaks and have owned it for 7 years it has stood up to galeforce winds including the night that Boscastle got flooded, the other tent is an Outwell Bear Lake 6 which is a polycotton 4 season tent and the best tent we have ever seen both for quality and space.
the latter I know is expensive but well worth it and if you do as we did and buy the display model we saved over £250 on the normal price.

I did try and warn everyone about the damage the side canopy can do to the vermont as it happened to ours, they suck beyond belief. Cabanon on ebay possibly???
------------- Always make the effort, life is too short.
We have never had any problems with our Vermont and have been using it 4 or 5 times a year for the last 3 years. However, we don't have the side canopy - can't imagine why we would need the extra space and what is already a monster size tent!
We have a family of 7, a teenager, with a friend coming for a week, a disabled child who needs a room of her own, 2 boys and another girl, so yes, we need the space this tent offers, and we were going to use a couple of pop ups to add flexibility, so were looking at the awning. These debates on the awnings do put me off and make me think we'd be better off using 2 of our smaller tents than splashing out on one big family tent.I just thought it would be easier with one big tent. It will also be up for 6 weeks in France so durability for us is important as we are likely to do this most summers once we've paid up for a large, what we thought would be quality tent.... any more confident reviews or advice?

If looking at polyester then take a look at the Kampa tents - their Ultimate Range uses 100D polyester. The higher the denier of the polyester the more tear and UV resistant. Other makes typically use 70-75D polyester. Take the following figures for example - 70D polyester will last UV radiation 30% longer than 70D nylon and 150D polyester will last 200% longer (everything else being equal - e.g. design).
We've had our 2008 Vermont L pitched for longer (overall) than this without these problems. The side canopy is pretty punishing to the tent (and the ears!) in high winds -- it would be better if Outwell speculatively fitted built in "docking" zips for these rather than having them drape over the 'roof' of the host tent, causing a lot of noise and damage.
OP: Has a chemical been applied to this tent? Perhaps a cleaning product of some sort?
That doesn't sound good at all . One thing that puzzled me though , the sun baking the bottom of the tent causing it to rip. After only 7 weeks use. I have a sunvalley and a nevada before that ,I assume theyre the same fabric as the vermont. both have had more than 7 weeks exposure and never been damaged by sun , we should be so lucky ..
I can't see how the sun baked the bottom of the tent and not the rest of it ? If it was degraded by sunlight , surely it would affecting be the whole tent , not just the bottom.
probably way off , but aftrer 5 weeks in the garden , it,s not cat pee that caused the damage on the bottom is it ?
