Hi everyone.

I have not gone camping since the 1970's except for staying in static campsite in Australia.

We live in Ireland and would like to go west in the spring and to France in the summer. There is only my OH and teenage daughter.

I have looked through these forums and the Gelert Lakesbury 5 seems to suit. I understand that the Hi Gear Mojave is the same tent, sold by Go Outdoors.

I also wish to buy carpet, footprint, and lots of assesories (beds, furniture, electrics).

The GoOutdoors website states they deliver to 'The UK and Ireland' but in another part the only list prices for UK delivery. I have emailed them to confirm that they deliver to Dublin area.

If that does not work out, could anybody tell me some websites that sell Gelert tents at reasonably cheap prices. Have found worldofcamping, who deliver to Ireland, but most of their gear is 'out of stock'.

Any help would be much appriciated.

Hello and welcome to the forum.  First post!!17

Many appear to have bought the Lakesbury/Mojave and for the most part like it. (You will find reviews through the "tent review" button at the top of this page.)  However, if you are stuck inside on a rainy day you may find it claustrophobic as there are no windows.

As for "going west" there is one site in Ireland that I would absolute love to stay at is Mannix Point.  I would so much like to live in west Cork or Kerry.

Thank you or your reply FS. Yes, everyone would love to live in West Cork [:)]

I have read many reviews on the above tent and others.

I seemed to have swayed towards the Outwell Minnesota 6 at £219

I am thinking of buying a footprint, carpet and maybe canopy extension to match. What do you all think about this setup?

I would be buying other gear (furniture, beds, electrics etc).

Is there anything else that I should buy for the tent that is a must?

At £219 the Minnesota 6 is a VERY good buy - far superior to the Mojave/Lakesbury. There is the possibility of a slight but easily-rectified issue with the side door canopy (see my review of the Minnesota 4) but this should not put you off buying it.

Be aware that there is a "canopy" and an "extension" for the Minny - the extension is of FAR more use. The carpet makes a great deal of difference. You can make your own footprint for less money but it's a bit more of a faff!

Ah, FS, I see you have a Minnesota 4.

Yep, I read about the 'tight' zips, and others solution for it. Hacksaw at the ready.

Have ordered the tent w/o footprint groundsheet and carpet from yeomans.

As it will be mainly used for me and the missus, I do not think I would eed an extension. The canopy I may consider at a later date is this one

Will read your review on the 4 berth version later

Personally I do not think that the hacksaw-job on the fibreglass pole will do anything to solve the tension on the zip and fabric of the side door. Good, strong cable ties, however, do the job perfectly.

As I state in my review for the Minny 4, I believe that some form of canopy/extension over the front door is all-but essential. The side canopy does not give much protection to the inner tent when it is raining and you will have to keep the side door zipped closed and then opeing it to get in and out. With an extension over the front door you can keep the front door open without fear of puddles forming in the living area. An extension also provides shade from sun as well as rain and, especially with the width of the Minny 6, you can use it to cook under. The extension made a massive difference to my Minny 4 as you can read
here.

I do urge you not to bother with the canopy; many on this forum have bought the canopy only to upgrade to the extension later.

Thank you once again FS for everything.

I read all the reviews on the 4 and 6 berth versions together with the extension reviews.

The extension will indeed be first thing on my list of extras. ATM most online companies seem to be out of stock. Yeoman had it for £75, but it is out of stock right now.

Oh, the tent has arrived already. That is good service to Ireland. Only oreded yesterday morning.

It's exciting getting a new tent; you can't wait to get it out and pitch it.

It's a shame about the extension. I looked it up on Yeomans for you last night and noticed that they had sold out. When the sales are on at this time of year you usually have to grab the item you want because, if the bargain's a good one and the item is popular, it will quickly sell out. A friend of mine has been looking for a tent and I advised him to get the Vermont L from Yeomans. He dithered and thought that the price would come down further and now he is too late.

I'll have a quick look on all the websites I have to see whether there are any Minny 6 extensions around.

Yep FS

I guessed that. That is why I bought the tent yesterday. At £219.95 for the Minnesota 6, I think I got a good bargain. Most of the other companies were asking close to £300.

There is a bit of soft rain here at present, so will wait untill dry before pitching in the garden.

At 28.5KG, the bag is heavy, and I would not like to have to carry it much more than than from car to pitching site.

I think most websites were asking over £100 for the extension, so the Yeomans price of £75 was probably to get rid of their 2009 stock.

Well, I've checked over 50 sites and only found 2; and they are more expensive than Yeomans had them:

Outdoor Action at £110.

Allweathers at £116.

Yes FS; I checked out lots of them myself. Outdoor actin charge £32 delivey to Ireland for up to 10KG

Allweathers do not deliver to Ireland and are out of stock in any case.

Am in no hurry, as I will not be using it till next spring. Also, I will be buying several other items, so will buy the whole lot together. Yeomans charge £25 for next-day delivery with no limit on weight.

Thank you for your help, FS.
