Worth looking at Nomad tents - they are a Dutch make.  Easy to put up, very well designed and substantial - generous sized.  Not cheap but you do get what you pay for.  UK importer http://horizonsonline.co.uk we have had several dealing with them and are really pleased with their customer service.  They know the tents and you can talk to them.  I have reviewed our Masai 6 and have recenlty purchased a Makonde 4 which is very compfortable for 4 people.

Hi Dawninatent,

Regarding Karsten Tents, Myself and my wife have just become the new UK dealer for Karsten and will have their complete range of inflatable tents available for viewing in the New Year, together with the new Dutch range of 'Human-Comfort' Camping Equipment and Accessories. So no need to go to Holland!

There is also a wealth of information regarding these tents on the Karsten Tent Club Website.

Hope this helps...

James

That is great news James :)

Congrats, hope it goes really well for you.

Dawn and her OH are already here in Holland and want a De Waard so I am helping them find a good preloved at the right price. I think we may have it in the bag so fingers crossed.

Good luck again

Angie

You are more than welcome :)

The first time I saw a Karsten my jaw dropped !  Gorgeous tents but they should come with a warning "Trailor needed" lol

And also a fab option for people who are getting older etc and struggle with pitching/pegging :)

Preloved?? I'm guessing you mean secondhand in ordinary money, I did guess it was a Dewaard they was after, thats the 'Dutch' tent that catches everybodies eye but I'm much rather erect(& live in)a Karsten tho, thats probabley the one tent that wouldn't blow away in a gale. More than I'd ever want to spend on a tent but if you want the best you've gotta pay for it I suppose.

Good luck to you tho Jimjam & I hope you shift a few. You don't need a trailer for a reasonable sized one. I know most Dutch campers tow trailers but they don't have to pay for ferries.

Well we are back with 2 fantastic tents and 2 new friends. We are going back to Holland next year at least once to go camping with our new mates.

What a result

Are Dutch tents actually made in The Netherlands? I love the look of the canvas tunnel mentioned in the previous page. Further, I'm have a vehement dislike of all things made in Cina and try and avoid if possible (very difficult at the moment) so would be very interested in a Dutch tent if it was made in Europe!
Thanks

We saw the Active leisure "Malta" tents, in Italy last year, and were very impressed with the layout, design and quality.

It would be much better than our Outwell Winfield in hot weather, but considering we only camp for 2-3 weeks a year, and that they cost £400, we felt we couldn't justify the outlay.

Perhaps we need less sensible, but more fun heads.

Regards,
Jim.

Some Dutch tents are made here and some are not. I know for certain that Esvo manufacter here. Their showroom is actually above their factory.

De Waards are manufactered mostly in the Czech republic  but they also have factories here. (I hope I got that right lol)

Not 100% certain where others are made but one thing I do know for sure is that the quality HAS to be to a specific standard and those standards are high.

I would be incredibly surprised if any of the middle to top ranges were made in China.

I need to know now so will do some homework and see what I can find out :)

Jim, we almost bought a Malta last year too but OH thought it was a tiny bit too small for 3 of us. He likes lots of room but what a gorgeous tent huh :)

Hi Kyoto, I don't think it really matters if the tent is made in China as long as it is made to the standard demanded by the brand name that sells it in Europe. If the Chinese can make the computer you use & the telly you watch, I'm sure they can make tents.

Any nylon tent you buy for £200 will of course be made in China & they normally do the job. You will always get manufacturing faults from any factory but whether the faulty goods reach the customer is down to quality control at the factory.

I would certainly be dissapointed if a tent costing over a £1000 was made in China, mainly because the distributor's profit would be huge. I would guess any mid range(ie £500-£700)polycotton tent will be made either in China or in any eastern European country where production costs are low.

I would love to know the factory gate price of a tent that retails for £800, certainly the massive discounting at the end of season of Outwell tents sold in't UK suggests the profit margin is large.

If you are buying an expensive tent I would say it is essential to inspect it erected. A tent is largly 'what you see is what you get' & you need to be able to inspect the quailty of materials/manufacturing for yourself.

It certaily is Angie.
We thought it would be ideal for just the two of us, but then our "sensible heads" spoke up.
Perhaps we need to stop listening.

We normally use the caravan in the UK as the weather is so unpredictable/lousy, and save the tent for touring Europe in the Summer.

Just had a mooch on the internet and,
de kampeerwinkel
are advertising this tent for E299 down from E749.95.
If that is correct, I may consider buying it, as that is a very big saving.

Regards,
Jim.

Jim..

I just had a look at Kampeerwinkel and the price has been reduced to €299 and will be available in March.

The tent details are here and the weight is 31,6 kg so that is over the weight for normal post so you would have to collect the tent, pay for a courier (mega bucks) or ask the store nicely to seperate the poles and post it in 2 parcels so the delivery cost would be reasonable then :)

But great price for that tent and well done for finding it

Angie

Try a Carl Denig Electra!

Our Dutch friends persuaded us to buy one this summer - best tent ever.  Pitch footprint first, then zip the fly on.  All poles are the same size and zip into the fly.  Made of technical cotton, so very strong, waterproof and relatively light despite huge living space it provides.  Absolutely no flapping or creaking in high winds, and no leakage in downpours.  We got the 4-man version and you can easily fit table and chairs inside - and due to the fantastic porch awning, can leave the front door open without the weather getting in.  No condensation, either.  At all.  Extremely well made, attention to detail excellent.

Customer service fantastic - we bought ours via lots of emails and phonecalls with a guy called Jeroen at the Nieuwegein store (jeroen at denig.nl) and paid via bank transfer.  I had to call Rabobank in Amsterdam at one point in the transaction, and they also spoke excellent English.

They are pricey, but worth it!
