First thing to do is have a trial run putting it up before you use it for real, it does take longer to put up than single skin tents and as you have to put up the inner tent first it helps to be able to be familiar with it in cases where you need to be 'rushed'.

When putting it up we get someone else to put all the poles together whilst we are putting the inner tent up and sort them out in order just to speed things up a little, two people can do it but it helps if you have some extra hands.

Then buy a large canopy immediately, if you use the tent when it's raining it's a pain to get in and out of the tent without getting water into it, it's the best thing we have bought for ours and makes the tent bigger and more open in any weather.

They are available from eBay for about £25+ and you won't regret it, we are also looking at getting something for one of the side doors just to give us the extra option for access but as they didn't make an 'official' one for the side door we are measuring up some other canopies to see if they'll fit.

Also get yourself a footprint groundsheet if you can, they are harder to get (the Vango ones) but we bought a big blue tarp from B&Q and cut it to fit, fitted eyelets and it's been great and for £4 (price at the time) you can't go wrong.

If you are considering carpets I believe the (Old) Vango ones aren't very good from what I've read so we made our own for the living area and the bedrooms and it does make a difference so something for you to consider if you are keeping the tent long term.

There is a very good review on here about it so check that out for some more pointers.

http://www.ukcampsite.co.uk/articles/view.asp?id=93

I can't think of anything more specific to be honest as ours has been brilliant, we've even slept in the living area and it's been fine.

Have fun, ours is the same model but as the door slopes outwards, the canopy covers it completely and lets you have the front entrance open in any weather, like this:

Hi, the lighter blue bit on the front of the DLX is the 'Large Vango Sun Canopy' it is very hard to get the original matching ones now unless your very lucky so we got the next best one we could, it was from a company in Scotland (Can't remember the name) and listed on eBay, it was about £26 inc postage (The cheapest at the time on eBay) and it's invaluable in wet weather, and as you can see it lets you cover the front entrance and gives you a lot more space.

It is deceiving the size of it and is quite tall, for a bit of extra comfort we sometimes (depends on who comes with us) use the living space as a sleeping area and it's still warm enough as it is double skinned.

Same here, we went last year with all of them in the Aspen and it was fine, 4 girls and 1 lad, our son had is own room, with the other 4 girls sharing the other 2, we then used the living area at night to sleep and sometimes the kids swapped with us, it worked perfectly and if we left the double mattress up in the day it was used for chilling out on, although last year we never needed to stay in once.

We made our own carpets for a bit of extra comfort but there are plenty of posts on here for alternatives, get yourself a groundsheet to go under the tent before you pitch it, we got a large blue one from B&Q and cut it to size, a little smaller all around the edge, we were fortunate enough to have a very large garden to use and try ours out on and cut the groundsheet at the same time.

For the actual tent you don't really need anything else apart from a porch for the reasons I gave earlier, a groundsheet and some carpets on the floor, it does make a difference.

For other bits do a search on here for each item as you want to found out the best options, there are loads of good suggestions on here and some you may not have thought of.

As an example, we use all our pots and pans and cooking utensils from home when we go, saves money and somewhere to keep stuff you don't use, you will of course end up with everything as we did but are slowly fine tuning our needs so we actually take less or more compact alternative, we used to take the duvets from home as well and whilst they are extremely comfy they do take up a lot of space, so this year we have just bought them some Mummy sleeping bags and we are getting a Coleman Double, that's just an example but you will find your feet on this site and enjoy what for us as been a great adventure for the kids and already have met some nutters....ooops, great minding friends who share the outdoor life.

It may seem a pain trying to sort everything, it took us months to source all out gear but once you have everything, you can't beat that feeling when you know you can get away anytime you want at relative small cost, anywhere in the country.

Excellent tent, loads of space and really cosy. We had one last year and only changed it because I needed bigger windows to watch our 4yr old outside lol.

We used to use lots of picnic mats inside for carpet. It's a really spacious tent and I have to say that no other tent bedroom ever compares to the one we had in there after opening the middle/side rooms - complete with hanging rail it was pure luxury!

Porch also a great size, kept loads of kitchen equipment in there as well as a picnic table and chairs.

Selling my sister's Aspen on here right now (reluctantly because she has become a foster carer and has very young babies to look after so no camping for her this year ).

Hope that you have loads of fun times with it, we certainly did

We bought this tent when it first came out about 2005 before the extended front porch.  The pitching instructions were unrealistic but we found the best way to pitch was by

1  Peg out the corners loosely

2 insert the front to back roof poles and then their respective upright poles

3  Starting with the middle side to side pole insert and then join its upright pole

4  Insert the other two side to side poles

5  insert the flexible pole which runs along the centre of the roof front to back

6  Peg out and pull over flysheet

We never felt the need for a canopy and loved the spaciousness and brightness of the tent
