We're interesting in the Outwell Vermont XL tent, but we want somewhere to store bikes, outdoor shoes, etc. I don't like the layout of the side awning as the tent becomes too wide, and many reviewers on this site mention the damage the side extensions can do with the cords running over the roof of the main tent. There also seems a gap between the awning and the main tent. I saw mention in a post from a while back of someone using the Montana 6 front extension on the front of the Vermont XL.
My question is, has anyone tried it, and even better does anyone have any pictures? I am a concerned that the Montana is 65cm narrower than the vermont, and 5cm shorter, and the roof poles are a different shape. I worry that we might just end up with a saggy mess that doesn't fit properly.
Any advice or comment very welcome.
Ade

Sorry but I don't think it will work, here's your Vermont XL:
and the Monty awning:
You have to clip side straps from the awning to the Vermont and I think as its that much narrower they won't sit right and give you the tautness it needs. Also the height of the awning is 5 lower and will stretch it a bit too much I reckon.
The Monty awning is 5cm higher than our Bearlake and even that was tight.
If it was me I would consider the Florida awning, its only 40cm wider and higher. I think the extra width would be OK as you can pull the straps into the tent and as long as it doesn't have to be 100% watertight I think it would work well.
Something else to think about perhaps, if you have a local dealer its always worth asking if they'll let you try before you buy, nows the time to ask before they get their tent displays up
Great thinking. I hadn't looked at the Florida, I was just following up on a previous post that suggested the Montana. The Florida one does look more similar to the roof shape of the Vermont. Just looked, and the Florida awning is 520cm, and the Florida tent is 500cm, so they clearly make the awning bigger than the tent. So the two tents are only 20cm different in width, and as you say it should be possible to tighten it down a little, better than stretching too much.
The front poles also lean forward more on the Florida than they did on the Montana, so it looks a more natural fit.
I'll get on the phone and see if anywhere will let me try it out and will post how I get on.
Spoke to the very knowledgeable Gary at The Tent Factory. He doesn't think the Florida awning would work, wrong size and shape in his opinion (the Vermont poles that the awning would cover lean forward more on the Vermont.
He's got me looking at the Kampa's now, and they look very well made, the Polzeath especially, and it has an accessory they call a vestibule (awning to us), which encloses the front.
Doing some more research, no-one showing the Kampa's yet as this year's stock doesn't arrive until just before Easter.
Found out that Outwell had changed the way the awning went over the tent from last year's canopy, so ended up getting the Vermont XL with the side extension. Tried it over the Bank Hol and loved it. Was like having a conservatory on the side of your tent. Does make it a whopping 8m x 9m though, so need to be careful with pitch selection.
Really sorry Mandy, have been bad at coming back to the site over the last year. Presume you have this answered by now. If not, they changed the way the awning fits over the main tent. Aparently the older version the ropes dug into the main tent causing it to leak on occasion. This is the old open version. The new enclosed awning doesn't do that. We've not used it all last year, and it's a brilliant extension to the tent. All the mess stays in the awning, and it's big enough when the weather is bad to have 3 families in there. Definitely worth the extra investment.
Just to clear things up the Montana front extensions and awnings DO NOT FIT the Vermont XL but they do fit the Vermont L

Don't suppose you have apic of the kit up for us to see? We have the Vermont XL and interested to see your side extension on it
Hi. Does anyone know if the poles from a vermouth xl will fit in a birdland 3? I've managed to buy a birdland 3 tent cover and sleep pods for £25 on ebay and found someone near me selling the poles for the vermouth xl
Just wondered if they would fit?
