Having moved to Spain with an Alpine Sprite we find we cannot register it here (has to be done similarly to a car and will cost us 1,600€) so are thinking of a tent. With the van we had hoped to tour throughout Europe to the far north of Norway taking the pets with us. We shall have to be less abitious with a tent I think.

We are two pensioners but sometimes we will have our daughter and her small son too.

Here in Spain when it does rain it can be torrential so that is a consideration.

I've done the googling and like the look of the Marechal Oxygen 4 and the Kampa Fistral:

http://www.tents4less.co.uk/kampa-fistral-4.html

and the Marechal Oxygen 4;

http://www.tents-direct.com/show_tents.php?productid=1539&forsale=tents&price=cheap&onlineproduct=Family+Frame+Tents#details

It's quite hard to buy a tent in Spain so we will probably need to buy via internet. We could pop to France if anyone knows of dealers in the South West.

I've looked at the cheapies from the UK and such as Decathlon here but I think we will need a better quality.

My husband is 6' and insists on having proper headroom. We had a frame tent years ago and loved it. Forget the make. A good one at the time when these were popular. I don't like to feel too claustrophobic - give me light!!

If anyone has any thoughts or recommendations I'd be very pleased. I don't think we could go above the price of the Marechal on our pensions.

Thanks

Hi Annem & welcome to the forum

I know the Marechal canvas tents are good quality, but I've never seen one of their synthetic tents in the flesh, so I can't comment on the Oxygen 4, although it looks like a spacious tent.

I know a lot of people on this forum have bought the new Kampa tents, so I'll leave it up to those in the know to give you their opinion.

The 2 tents that you are looking at look no better than the large Quechua tunnel tents that you can buy from Decathlon who have branches in Spain.

Any tent of the size you want in that price range will be polyester. If you want a similar tent in polycotton you will have to pay double that & for canvas it will be far more than that.

Thanks everyone.

What about the level of waterproofing in the Quencha tents though? The Marechal has 5000 and the Kampa 4000. Would that not be a better bet in torrenmtial rain here in Spain and mountain storms in the rest of Europe? Or am I being misled by these numbers?

I think you will find any polyester tent you buy will be waterproof. I have camped down in southern France & Spain with cheap tunnel tents in the downpours you describe with no probs.

When you pitch a tent you must be more careful than when parking a caravan. Ideally you need a pitch that drops away slightly & with no hollows where water can collect. When you get a downpour on hard baked earth, the water does not sink but runs across the top so it needs to be able to run under the tent & away.

You need to make sure the ground sheet in't living area if not sewn in has the edges turned up so the water runs underneath. Polyester degrades in strong sunlight & if the tent is erected for say 4-5 wks total in the summer, I would bin it after about 3-4 seasons use(ie 16wks total)or it will eventually split apart.

A canvas tent will last much longer, indefinately if looked after. If you want to spend about £300 tops a Quechua tunnel tent from your nearest Decathlon will do the job.

This Quechua tent looks at least as good as the others you linked to.

You might like to note that the "feel the difference" 100D flysheets used on the Kampa ultimate range should outlast the 70-75D flysheets of many other makes even without the extra UV protection they've added. Which means that you will get a longer life out of a 100D Kampa polyester tent than many others. Yes, a canvas tent will last longer but will be heavier and more bulky for the same size of tent, although cooler in warmer climates. For myself, the durability of the flysheet and other components of the tent, along with the level of waterproofing and other design features makes a Kampa tent certainly worth considering.

An example quote from http://www.eurekatent.com/tent_selection.aspx (although I've read similar figures elsewhere) - "75D Polyester is 10-20% stronger than 70D nylon, and has 30% longer life under UV exposure. 150D Polyester is 50% stronger than 70D nylon, and has 200% longer life under UV exposure". By deduction then - the higher the denier of the polyester (all other things being equal - eg. quality of material construction) the longer the life of the tent under UV exposure. It is also stronger and more tear resistant, which certainly gives the Kampa's 100D tents the edge over many other makes and explains why retailers have found the ultimate range to outlast many other makes in outdoor displays.

Oh only just seen this. Thanks.

I've been reading posts on HH and was moving towards polycotton. Going back to the Kampa now (or muddy Quechua)!!

This all makes me laugh really. I'm 62 and my first camping experience was at age 18 months in Westward Ho which I can remember!!! We had a white canvas ridge tent. Later on we had a larger green one. Never remember leaking even in Scotland and lake District. First marital tent was a frame tent (we could them "continental" in those days. Canvas let in fine spray in Salcombe during that storm which decimated the fastnet race some years ago. We then left it for a few years without checking proofing. Took it to Loch Lomond maybe 20 yrs ago. Rain OMG!!! Tent like sieve!!! Popped in to Glasgow in hope of tracking down a launderette to dry the sleeping bags. No joy. Every one of them was doing contract washing for the Glasgow hospitals! What an eye opener. had to cover tent with plastic sheeting!! Haven't been under canvas since!

We have also just been re-exploring the camping experience - although in the form of introducing our son (2 years old last year) to our long term hobby. We've had to invest in  a lot of new gear and up-size on a budget to cater for the extra little person. Both myself and my OH have had canvas and a range of nylon and polyester tents over the years. Most have done us proud (almost a leaky sieve last spring in Wales but we survived!), but in choosing our new tents I was given strict instructions - "NO CANVAS - too heavy and bulky. Can't be dealing with it!". As you can imagine - its been great fun doing all the homework and choosing...

Our Vango Columbia 600 was a great buy (still a few around) at £275, but I am glad we can stretch to getting a Kampa ultimate tent in the Bude 4 for our weekend tent. It will probably outlast the big tent and will probably get more use too!

Helen

Hi Helen,

Your Vango looks an excellent deal. I think it's bigger than we want or need. I must admit that the look of the Kampa Fistral tempts me. It looks very light and open. I like camping to feel as much as if you are in the open as possible.

I enjoy the research but very much miss the chance to visit shows and outdoor shops and having a good look at the tents in situ. There doesn't seem to be anything like that here in Spain.

http://www.megacheapcamping.co.uk/product/4962/CABANON_ANDORRA_FRAME_TENT_Y6

or how about this.

I was tempted by a Sunncamp Palace but am wary of secondhand as I live in Spain. One of these new would have seemed like a home from home as similar to our old one except colour.
